Toy gun...that's all I ever hear when the news is talking about Tamir Rice being shot by police. Why are they reporting the gun as a "toy"? I did a couple minutes of research and found out that the "toy" was an airsoft replica gun. What does that mean? That means that it was a pellet gun...it was technically a gun...not a "toy".
When the media says toy gun, it makes me think this:
not this:
Why does the media want me to think it was a toy, when it was a pellet gun? A pellet gun is a gun, and although they are considered nonlethal, they could actually seriously harm someone. Adults buy them to train their kids how to shoot, it's like training wheels for guns! Where were the adults? You still have to supervise a child with a pellet gun. My dad taught me to never point a gun at someone...and that meant bb guns, toy guns, and even your hand and fingers mimicking a gun. You just didn't do it.
The fault in Tamir Rice's unfortunate death lies solely with the parents.

It wasn't "solely" the parents fault... nor was it solely the fault of a bad cop.
A 13yo kid knows (or should know) the difference between "right and wrong". The dispatcher could have relayed a more detailed report. There's lot's of "fault" to pass around.
I agree it starts at home.
That doesn't mean that we (as a society) shouldn't use these incidents to take a step back and look at what happened and how we can avoid things like this in the future.
That said... I agree calling it a "Toy Gun" (if that is what you are reading / seeing in current media reports) is not accurate. It looks like a real gun, especially from the distance a cop would need to be at in order to make a reasonable judgement call. So take that out of the equation; whether it's real or fake... it looked real.
Judge the actions of the cops based on the assumption it was real. You may still feel they were hasty in their actions. Could they not have stayed back, called for backup, used some gas or something to knock the kid out from a distance? Perhaps waited to see if he made more aggressive moves or fired? I know that increases the risk to their personal safety, but by how much? Should they not take some risk before opening fire?

Is a 13yo kid capable of understanding that pointing a real-looking gun at people in public is wrong? Should a parent allow his/her kid to have access to this type of weapon?
There is lots of "blame" to go around. Often these incidents have a few places where the problem could have been avoid if any one of them went "right"... and it takes several mistakes for a tragedy like this to happen.

There are 4 deaths a year from pellet guns in the US
You guys are full of shit or don't know what you're talking about. Rice had an air soft replica gun, it shoots pellets like this-
Pellet guns on the other hand fire pellets that are like this-
An air soft weapon will irritate your eyeball if you get hit with one in the eye, a pellet rifle firing a lead pellet can kill you. Rice had the former, not the latter.
Tamir Rice never brandished the weapon at the officers. He never pointed it at the officers.
The police report filed before the video emerged was full of lies. The report said Rice brandished the weapon at the police, that was a flat out lie. The replica air soft gun was in Rice's waistband the whole time. The police report tried to justify the shooting by saying that the weapon looked real and lacked the neon color barrel plug but the cops wouldn't have known if there was a neon plug or not because Rice never pulled the weapon out of his waistband. The report was full of other lies as well and it would never have come to light had it not been for the video.
The officer in question who shot Rice, Timothy Leohmann, that piece of shit, before working in the Cleveland PD used to work for a township of Independence as a police officer. There Leohmann resigned because he was about to be terminated because he was emotionally unstable. Dangerously so. When Leohmann was hired by the Cleveland PD his personnel files from Independence were never reviewed before hiring. Had they been reviewed the Cleveland PD would have known they were hiring a ticking time bomb who was bound to do something as stupid as this Rice business.
Rice did absolutely nothing illegal. It doesn't matter that he had a gun because Ohio is an open carry state. The police didn't even try to determine if the weapon was legal to possess, which it was.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't like the police departments hiring unstable trigger happy morons who shoot juveniles in the park and then like about it on official police reports to cover up negligent homicides. Hell, just for falsifying the police reports the officers in question should be tossed in jail. What happens if you as a regular citizen lie on official government forms, like say your taxes, what would happen to you? You'd be facing jail.
Cops lie like mother fuckers on their reports all the time and they cover for each other like like scumbags. But it's all Rice's fault! Pfffttt. Ohio is an open carry state, btw. The cops didn't even try to figure out if Rice was carrying legally. They just shot his black ass dead and left him laying there to bleed out. Oh yeah, they shot him and didn't provide any first aid until another officer (a detective) showed up. The detective immediately started trying to save Rice's life while Leohmann and his training officer stood around gawking at a dying juvenile. Talk about pieces of shit, Leohmann is one.
I'm pretty sure the "open carry" law wouldn't apply to a 13yo.
Additionally all reports said he was "brandishing the weapon" and pointing it at people. If he just had a gun in his belt and wasn't brandishing it and threatening people... why would they have called police???
Please provide link to the video you describe.
I think it's entirely possible and likely the police overreacted. That DOES NOT mean that all "Cops lie like mother fuckers." You are taking an extreme and unreasonable view. Take a breath and rethink.

Times and locations.
A couple kids in the woods in the middle of nowhere... where you might shoot at squirrels or a duck, that's drastically different than the middle of a playground in an urban setting. Sorry... just is.

Rethink what? My distrust in the police? Why? They've shown nothing that gives me reason to trust the police, ever. It's not just me, go to your most preferred attorney and he'll tell you the exact same thing, don't trust the police and don't ever talk to them. Ever, not without an attorney present. Even if you're not guilty of anything, don't tell the police shit, ever. You asked for a link so here's one for you, you should take the time to watch it. Not only is it interesting, it's also a touch comedic and entertaining and it's a lecture given to college law students by a lawyer and a police officer and they explain why one never ever talks to the police or trusts the police enough to ever interact with them in any way without a lawyer present.

Of course physical danger aside, airsoft guns cannot harm anyone and they certainly can't kill anyone. Pellet rifles are another story, but that's irrelevant because Rice didn't have a pellet gun.

You people are so afraid of guns you shit your pants at the very thought of them. What a bunch of morons. And this justifies shooting someone dead over? Ha! Rice isn't the only person who's been murdered by cops because they shit themselves with fear, there was that other kid in a walmart who had picked up an air soft replica off the shelf and was going to purchase it when some fool freaked out, called the cops and the cops shot him down in the aisle without warning because the cops were so fearful of their lives.
Cops act as if their job is so dangerous that they can be given a pass when they f*ck up like this. I say bullshit, any cop who goes into the job without acknowledging the risks and accepting those risks doesn't gun people down unless they are absolutely sure their life is actually in danger. Hell, our soldiers who fight in wars have a stricter shoot to kill rules than cops (called Rules of engagement). The cops face few consequences for their actions that would land a soldier in Leavenworth if they acted the same way IN A WARZONE!
Keep on defending sociopaths like Loehmann when they gun down juveniles, keep on turning a blind eye as the police institutions look the other way when police reports are found to be falsified and watch the country burn itself down because this kind of shit pisses people off. Remember Chris Dorner? The ex cop who went psycho and started murdering people? Remember when the cops shot up two women who were driving in a vehicle that the cops thought was Dorner's even though the vehicle was a different make, model and color than Dorner's? You know what happened to those cops who shot those women to pieces? Absolutely nothing except a note to file and retraining, no charges were brought against the officers who violated the LAPD's use of force policies but the taxpayer had to shell out some $4.2 million to the women in settlement damages plus the cost of their medical treatment. Toss those cops in jail and and maybe the rest of the cops will start using their brains first instead of shooting first. Not only will it save a lot of innocent lives but it'll save the taxpayers a hell of a lot of money.

I think you should rethink your extreme view. Extreme views are rarely helpful.
My family lawyer has never said anything like that to me at all. I personally know many fine people who are police officers. I have also had bad interactions with police; once wrongly arrested and another time put into "protective custody". In both cases at the time I felt the police where "in the wrong" and in one I felt (at the time) they used excessive force. In retrospect I now believe the force they used was not excessive; and though I still feel I was wrongly arrested once, the "PC" was a smart move on their side.

BTW. I know virtually nothing about this case except what I have read in the past day from wiki and old online reports. The original incident has fallen of my radar... I try not to dwell on shit and try to avoid most news.
It's a healthier way to live.
So your statements lumping me with "you and others" is pretty unfair and completely inaccurate.
That said... I still maintain that there is plenty of fault to go around. -> If the kid made smart decisions, he'd still be alive. -> If the kid's parents controlled him and/or taught him some facts of live, he'd still be alive. -> If the cops didn't over-react, he'd still be alive.
The kid's bad decision does NOT mitigate the responsibility / fault of the police. If it is determined they were wrong they should lose their jobs / be criminally prosecuted. At the same time, you only help yourself in life be making smart decisions in life and avoiding problems. This kid didn't do that.

Yes. That's why I said "physical danger aside". Because it's a non-factor. They couldn't have been seriously hurt... but THEY DIDN'T KNOW THIS. THE GUN LOOKED REAL.
If you seriously think they shot a kid on purpose, and they knew he had a fake gun... then I can't talk with you, because that is an extreme and extremely stoopid position.

You need to read my posts before you comment on my views.
The reason no one ever likes telling the full story? That's simple, we don't like to humanize or sympathize. We're afraid of our own limitations, we don't want to know that you or I could easily make the same errors as a victim or a perpetrator. Reaction is so much easier if we say someone is to blame, the "idiots" or the "monsters", not complete logical humans like us. No, if everyone were just like "us" this, and every other incident could have obviously been avoided, "they" are just doing it wrong.
If we do want the bitter unbiased truth, we have to look at every single innocuous and chaotic moment snowball into disaster time and time again with no way to "solve" every equation. Here is the full story:
It is what it is: Kid goes to park to mess around with an airsoft gun, points it at people. Caller feels threatened, reports it to emergency dispatchers. Dispatcher relays situation to police, leaves out caller data that it might have been a toy. Police arrive at scene, and fire immediately upon seeing Tamir reach for the object on his waist.
There are a lot of "whys" of course. Why point a toy gun at people? Maybe it's the media and the culture of romanticized violence everyone grows up in since the dawn of humanity. Can you really say you've never had a dumb idea as a child? Why call the police? Wouldn't you feel threatened if someone pointed a gun like object at you? Why not tell the officers it might be a toy? If the eyewitness is unsure, telling the police to let their guard down could get them killed. Why not wait before driving up? If you were just told someone has been threatening passersby with a gun, can you afford to wait for them to point it at someone else? Why open fire so quickly? Every moment is just that. The cops that survive are either lucky or quick.
Reality is even more tragic than them vs us. Almost everything good and evil that people do most likely felt perfectly reasonable in their own head. Learn from them.

That son of a bitch....had the nerve to yell at a lost 9 year old. "DON'T CALL ME AN OFFICER,(POINTING TO HIS STRIPES) I'M A SARGENT." I said,"O.K. Constable",then I spit on him an ran through a crowd of people. I found my family 20 minutes later on my own. "F" the police. ConfederateSS.out!(The Blue and Silver Rebellion).
