Let's look back on the culture of this period.
The video game list was really hard to pick. I could probably do a list of 20 just for arcade games, just for NES games and just for adventure games, but I had to use those lists and intersperse some classic PC games. Games that almost made the cut include Centipede, Super Mario Bros.(the first one, probably the only series that could have 2 games in this poll), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 1942, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, Metroid, Populous, Duck Hunt and Double Dragon.
Umm... How did MGS not make the Cut.... You're fired Yoshi! FIRED!!!!

I got my first job cleaning a donut shop in 1984. I specifically requested Thursday / Payday off. I would go after school, get my check, go to the Mall, cash it, and drop $10-$15 (a good chunk of my weekly take-home) at "The Dream Machine".
Some games I thoroughly enjoyed that aren't mentioned...
Star Trek - Strategic Weapons Simulator
http://www.skooldays.com/categories/arcade/ag1137.htmIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
http://www.skooldays.com/categories/arcade/ag1065.htmSpy Hunter
http://www.skooldays.com/categories/arcade/ag1136.htmHonorable Mentions include...
Burger Time
Dig Dug
and Joust
As an aside I spent the rest of my check on food and Dungeons & Dragons books.

Yes I was, am. a nerd.

What was the arcade game where the robots (when nobody was playing) used to say "Coin detected in pocket!"?

Tecmo Bowl with No Jackson is unstoppable unless you had Lawrence Taylor and the NY Giants.

Does 1989 really count as "the 80's?" (and by that I mean October of 1989) I always thought PoP was a 90's Video Game genre.

I love the graphics, but I found the controls (through Emulation) to be very clunky. Maybe it needs another shot.
As per the other arcade games: it was the golden age of the arcade so I'm not surprised to see other suggestions. My personal favorite arcade game (which I played on NES) was Bubble Bobble, which I never beat the boss of. You'd think that after 99 levels, I would bruteforce my way through that... and I tried. After a few days, it was time to give up.
yes bubble bobble was great....i was able to beat the game many times with 2 players
spy vs spy is worth a mention

We had an Atari in the early 80's, and my favorite was Freeway. Simply a chicken crossing a busy road. Spent hours playing that game.
Bollocks.

I you played the NES version, yeah it sucks. You definitely should try the DOS version, it's great.
Also, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (the adventure game) should be on that list IMHO.

Contra? anybody? I thought somebody would have mentioned that one at least by now. I only picked 3 for that purpose, using my last vote for Contra, which is one extra vote than some of the others listed

Losts of good games came out during that time period though, true classics. I'm also a little surprised Megaman didnt get more love.
Oh well, this thread makes me want to play my NES when I get home!
PS, +1 for Tecmo Bowl!

DY, you should have used the four minutes you took compiling this list to crank out a batch of knuckle children.
