Jack is looking at Anne, but Anne is looking at George. Jack is married, but George is not. Is a married person looking at an unmarried person?

A brand-new wooden ship sails the seas for a year. The ship is called Arianne. After this first year it has to replace a couple of weathered pieces of wood. The captain has 'm replaced and continues to sail the seas. The ship is still called the Arianne. A couple of years down the line all pieces of the ship were replaced at least once. The logical question thus begs: is it still the same ship? People still call it 'the Arianne'.

Seems like a restating of the Ship of Theseus, or "my grandfather's axe" question. It's more philosophy than logic.

Yeah, I couldn't remember the name.

No worries, did you pick a choice yet?

Yes.

Jack-->Anne-->George=Jack-->George

(2x1)x3=6=(2x3)x1

Breaking this down the answer is yes.
Jack_marr(M) > Anne_?> George_Unmarr (U)
2 possibilities:
1. Jack_M > Anne_M > George_U = M>U (Married looking at unmarried)

2. Jack_M> Anne_U> George_U = M>U
Therefore yes because being married is not an unambiguous state of being, you either are or you are not.
Also Jack != George b/c Jack=M and George=U

ok i won't use strange characters like others

I'll go by 2 assumptions:

1) anne is married.
In that case the answer is no, because married jack would be looking at married anne

2) anne is not married
In that case the answer is no, because an unmarried anne is looking at an unmarried george.

f*ck you math; words work sometimes better than formulas.

1) but then Married anne is looking at unmarried Goergoe -> answer is yes

2) but then Married Jack is looking at unmarrie Anne -> answer is yes.

the boat is not the parts it's made of; it's what makes the essence of its concept. If you see a part of it you would not call it a boat... you would call it a sail, a winch, a mast....
If you changed more than 50% of its hull at the same time, I think you could consider changing it's name. If you changed more than 50% of the boat, but less than 50% of hull; it should still be called arianne. The boat by essence is a floating entity, it's what makes it a boat. A sunk ship might be still be called a boat, even if it's not completing its primary function... to float. You would rather call it a ship wreck or a sunken ship... just a ship wouldn t be reall correct!

the fact that part of it is false makes the whole thing false.

Like if I tell you I am a 6 meters high human; well yeah I'm really a human but I'm not really 6meters high, so that was a false statement as a whole.

Actually it depends on the wording and I'm not too sure the wording here is clear to me. I don't understand if the question is if it's happening at least once, or if it's happening in all cases.

the example you gave has two conditions that must both be true. The original question is two statements that only one needs to be true (an 'or' statement).

it can be simplified to: (is Jack married and Anne unmarried) or (is Anne married and George unmarried)

Assume J = Jack is married, A = Anne is married, G is George is married, so this can be:

(J and ~A) or (A and ~G)

since it's a given that J is true and ~G is true, this statement is true

Yes, there appears to be a logic problem ...
None of you have any ... :twisted:

Fascinating, isn't it, Mr. Spock.

The answer is absolutely yes.

Jack (M)
Anne (?)
George (U)

Jack-->Ann--->George

Since it isn't said if Ann is married or not you have two possibilities.
Go with Ann unmarried first-

Jack(M)---->Ann(U)--->George(U)
in which case you have a married looking at an unmarried.

Now the second case, Ann is married.
Jack(M)---->Ann(M)---->George(U)
in which case you still have a married person looking at an unmarried person.

Either way, a married person is looking at an unmarried person.

No need to even bother at that subject... I will let a Jew like you and Islamist like Symmetry to kill each other. You already do that efficiently in the last 70 years :lol:

What if you took all the original rotten parts and rebuilt the ship?
Which ship is truly the arianne then?
