The nation is so unfit nearly half of people think they could only manage to run for half a mile, according to a poll by the British Heart Foundation. And a shock 48 per cent of women and 42 per cent of men can't even run for a bus without panting for breath. The surprising figures come as the charity launches its MyMarathon campaign, urging people to run a marathon in a month to raise funds for vital research into heart disease. In an effort to find out how fit Britons are overall, 2,000 men and women around the country were quizzed about their running abilities and habits.
Of those who said they could manage to run a mile, a staggering 29 per cent confessed the last time they actually did was more than ten years ago.. And one in five felt they were so unfit they could only make to a 100 metres. Forty seven per cent of adults said if they went running now, the furthest they could manage was just half a mile or less.

Ran? A mile?
Bud if the bus did not stop after a half a block I'm going back to the stop I ran past trying to catch it.
Ok, so now I just read the bit about buses in the article. The only reason I could think of for running, though I suppose I am much more likely to run for an elevator (lift).
I must not be the only person who has never ran a mile at one time uninterrupted. Especially with a presumably high amount of people from the USA here.
Write in for, "I may not have ran a mile total, life time."

Back in the day, all kids were required to run a mile for gym. Maybe the times have changed?

There was never a mandatory mile run in my City. There were a few distance things where they encouraged you to run if you could. No one was forced to run. You could walk if you wanted.
Back when I did them they even called it walk-a-thon.

In Canada in the 70's we had fitness badges in school. It was the Partcipaction program. They recently reintroduced it but not sure if they have the badges anymore.

That's like asking for an Imperial or metric adjustable wrench.

None of the poll options applies to me. It was a lot more than 10 years ago, but it was not "too long to remember." I can tell you the exact day -- June 6th, 1975. Won the silver medal in the three-mile at the school board track meet.
Later that summer I started smoking. Never ran competitively again. At the time, it seemed just like coincidence; I was too "busy" to run. In retrospect....

I don't run a lot but, sometimes, her husband will come home early or I won't hear the garage door open and then I have to hit the pavement pronto. So, maybe it's been a week or so?

I don't run measured distances like that, but in the last week I played soccer on Tuesday, softball on Wednesday, hockey Friday and Saturday and soccer again today
I think that's enough

I only ever got a pin.
The stand out event was flexed arm hang. I don't know if I could get 8 seconds on that there was a guy in my class that could do the 2 minutes or whatever and keep going.

I'm a bona fide couch potato. I can't run a mile. At least a dozen overrides in my brain kick in. I'm pretty sure that they could all be overridden if there was a sexy half naked female running ahead of me, but I haven't been able to verify this in the field.
I can walk a mile, however, and normally try to do that every day.
Going uphill adds considerable resistance to my motivation.

I've been known to run a 3-minute mile while chasing a quick buck.
2dimes, for shame. You need to watch the Best Canadian Television Program of All Time some more:
I still can't believe there isn't a DVD set available.
