Every time I order something spicy at a Thai restaurant, i always insist on the hottest level (usually they have like mild-medium-hot-very hot for choices or something), and it's never hot. I think they give me white person spicy, assuming I'm just talking a big game. It's frustrating.

My best example was in a London hotel at the buffet line. They informed me the tomato soup was "very spicy." I'm not fond of exceptionally spicy food. I though it bland, actually, kind of like a warm Gazpacho.

I've only been to a few places selling hardcore spicy food in London, and those are all run and operated by Arabs or Pakistanis. Everywhere else is fairly 'watch out for the spice, we put a chili in that one'.

Does not compare to some of the very hot dishes of the Southwest in the USA. Not kidding you! Some of these joints have peppers that are so oooooo hot, it could put you in the hospital.

I have had such hot pepper that made my entire mouth and lips turn deep red, sweat running down my face and my throat burning like I just had drank sulfuric acid.

There used to be a "BBQ" place here. It was ok for a chain restaurant. Not as good as Famous Dave's but decent chicken. They had a wall of hot sauce. Back then I would eat spicy fairly regularly. There were two sauces that were not even enjoyable.

Da Bomb and Dave's Ultimate Insanity.

Weirdly, I've found the opposite to be true. Americans tend to be more conservative about spicy food, especially Indian. Anglo-Indian food is massively popular in the UK. True, the signature dish- chicken tikka masala, is bland, but people do like their vindaloo too.

Maybe that's a reflection of my experience of more northerly states though.

Fun fact- some of the hottest chilies in the world are grown in the UK.

this person needs to be offended more often. for me, being sterotyped is half the fun of eating @ ethnic restaurants. a small price to pay, if the food is good...
