I saw the F-35 stop nose up and hover in one spot for 20 seconds and then move on.

Decades ago the mig-29 used to do tail slides at air shows in Canada. The announcer always said it was the only fighter jet certified to do the maneuver.
I'm pretty sure the US forces guys were hoping every time, "Please let today be the day it flames out so we get to see that crazy pilot eject."

Dude, it's still pretty impressive. That's a cold war era jet, updated, sure, but you've got to appreciate the showmanship. That's some impressive piloting no matter what.
Obviously nobody would take it seriously as a modern warplane, but that doesn't detract from how it looks in a show with an expert pilot.
