BMW / other car fans, anyone?

Yes? No? Love talking cars....thot I'd pick Beemer as various peeps in my fam have had them over the years and after 3 months of research, my eldest son just made his very first car purchase, solo. Did all bargaining, finances, paperwork...real proud of him.

Picked up a 2002 M3, 70000 miles. Showroom condition in and out. Ridden in many M class Beemers but never driven one. Damn thing is a blast...

I know other makes much better but am learning quick....we try and do all mechanicing ourselves, especially on German cars. Ordered rear shock tower mounts and shocks and all the rear bushings....first project ;o)

Very low indeed. Believe he got it for 15 grand and got new main k bus module, cool and reserve tank and 4 tires done first. Also has a 2 grand hand built racing muffler, can't recall the brand. Oh, and all new M emblems and shift knob

My 335i is the biggest piece of shit car I've ever owned. f*ck BMW! This car has almost ruined my life. its been sitting in my garage for 3 years with 20K miles & I can't drive it because it breaks EVERY FUCKING TIME. I'm on my 4th electric water pump @$1200 a pop. Rev 6 on the high pressure fuel pump & revision 12 on the high pressure, direct injectors.

All window regulatorts have failed at least twice. The turbos have been recalled. The window wash fluid tank motor has failed. on and on and on./

Less than 5k miles a year for 16 years. Did it by any chance have 1 previous owner who was a vicars wife? I think that's very expensive for the age and I'd be dubious of the mileage. Fingers crossed your son has hit lucky but old BMW's cost quite a bit to keep going.

Rammstein- One owner, retired dude from central texas...was his dream play car. Friend of my sons is a wholesaler; buys from all over the country and had been watching for my boy.

As to price; did you arbitrarily think "oh thats a high price" or did you look it up somewhere? All the normal used car valuation sites agree approximately on value and I am an old time KBB believer. They put this car at $15,194-$19,071. We are car people and put a lot of effort into this ;o)

And the only way for normal people (i.e. not rich, like us) to own these (or any other nice) cars is to do your own work. I built my truck from the ground up including painting. We had 200+ hours in his previous car getting it to show winning condition. I owned (inexpensive) porsches for over 20 years / 300,000 miles and did all the work myself.

So yeah, parts can be more than chevy parts, but if you got the time and the place, they are completely affordable ;o)

If it wasnt such a pain in the ass I'd post some pix. Got some of my truck if you like massive gas guzzling workhorses, lol.

it sounds quite cheap to me, at least from a european perspective. an e46 M3 can be purchased for around 20 to 35K€ around here, in germany significantly cheaper i guess... but it's really not the type of car I would like to mess around with (and I'd be expecting a POS for 20k)... owners of M3 are not the type of guys you'd want to buy a used car from as they tend to beat the living crap out of them. And yes, the quality of BMW is far worse than mercedes or audi. I would've gone for a C class AMG or an RS4.... but it's true that M3 are awesome cars when they work. If your son wants to do a lot of garage work and has thousands to put in each year in that car, great. If he thinks that owning it is just about the purchasing price tag and that it's a daily driver.... no.
So yeah; I'd just say great week end car and "project car" to work on with your dad once in a while on curvy roads.

While I appreciate the torque, fuel economy and longevity of diesels, I fonking hate them. I derive half of my driving enjoyment from the sound my baby generates. Sets off car alarms regularly and doesnt sound like a busted sewing machine in a fart can - I worked hard for that

I have a turbo diesel car and it’s got very decent power. I live in a sunny area and my enjoyment driving is going with the top down on beach front roads and making the engine scream down shifting and feeling the torque reaccelerating. It’s also a true 4 seater and has a very decent trunk space and a hard top. The car is 10 years old and I’ve barely had mechanical problems with it... and it has managed to be convenient in any phase of my Life ... from single to gf + baby + dog to single dad etc lol. I’ve also had to import it a couple of times lol
It’s my miracle whip. My first car, and it’s still in a great shape. No reason to ever change it. If it works don’t fix it. I was urged to buy a SUV by my stupid ex who hated my dracula car (black exterior red leather interior) and hated convertibles. f*ck you the car stayed and you’re out.
