I know theres a bunch of folks here being affected by this. I cannot imagine temps in the negative double digits. -50 in Minnesota? People dying....damn.

Anyone going thru this wanna comment?

They used to call it winter. Now it is Arctic Blast, Polar Vortex, etc.

We've had a lot more winter than usual. I had a bit of overtime last week...:)

Finally had a day off yesterday. Snow-blowed the driveway. An hour later it had all drifted in again...:(

It's blowing and drifting and cold as hell. Still, we've got it easy here compared to what's happening in Minnesota. I think our overnight low tonight is expected to be -23, -37 with the windchill. (Just for you KB, the Fahrenheit equivalents: -9 absolute, -35 with the wind chill)

Actually, you're quite right. This is a direct result of global warming. As the polar air masses warm up, they get less stable. Big chunks of the polar air mass have always broken off, but they're doing so more regularly now.

This map shows it nicely. Much warmer than usual over East Asia, the Pacific Northwest of North America, and the Arctic Ocean, while huge chunks of polar air have broken off, one over east-central North America and another over mid-Siberia.

I live in Minnesota and it's pretty damn cold. It was 28 degrees below zero fahrenheit when I walked outside yesterday morning. Wind chill was right around 50 Below.

Quiet. Let them think I was being sarcastic.
Seriously, we haven't had a major snow fall on Long Island all winter.
It's either too warm (rain) or dry cold.
We had a front pass by yesterday, it was supposed to be massive. The weather radar predictors were going crazy.
Turned out that the actual front was so narrow in terms of the temperature gradient that it was basically a fast moving 15 minute snow storm.
We have single digit (F) temperatures now but only a few places which have a dusting of snow.
And then it's supposed to be in the 50's again sometime in the next seven days.

It's almost as if global warming and climate change are somehow connected. Somebody should ask scientists in various fields all over the world to figure out if this is true.

Today it's 80 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze off the Gulf. No more Chicago winters for me.

Well here in NW Oregon its been a milder than usual winter. No snow yet. Mid 20's at nite (cold as its gotten so far), 40 in the day. Weird.

My stoopid stubby fingers that I chopped off hurt like f*ck when its below 50....cannot imaging below zero figures.....

*shudders*

Note: yes, stoopid uhmerikun using fahrenheit

It's chilly today. Everyone here is freaking out because it's -23C but it's often milder.

When I was a kid we had full winters more often.

Part of why it sucks here, is Tuesday I was fine in a hoodie. It feels worse because I'm soft and don't want to go tobogganing. After I couldn't snow board anymore winter stopped being fun.

At your age you should try something easier on the bones. Like singing death metal.

shows how tough the planet is, surprised it doesn't crack in half.. freezing up the top end, burning down the bottom end.
Heading for another triple fahrenheit day here today (only 105).. Tasmania to my south has been burning for near on 2 weeks and doesn't look like they will put it out anytime soon.
Not many structures I know will hold these extremes without buckling.

It's actually not. Any change is going to result in ... er a change? That's the problem with "climate change" ... when climate changes all the time, it's impossible to describe what "change" you are talking about. Correlation does not imply causation.

Here is something from the National Weather Service ...

The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It ALWAYS exists near the poles, but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter. The term "vortex" refers to the counter-clockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air near the Poles. Many times during winter in the northern hemisphere, the polar vortex will expand, sending cold air southward with the jet stream (see graphic above). This occurs fairly regularly during wintertime and is often associated with large outbreaks of Arctic air in the United States. The one that occurred January 2014 is similar to many other cold outbreaks that have occurred in the past, including several notable colder outbreaks in 1977, 1982, 1985 and 1989.

Because, you know, global warming happens in ... er cycles?

We're going to get rain tonight.
Currently Long Island is either.
Dry Cold
or
Warm Wet
