Highway maps used to be free. The Michelin [Restaurant] Guide was free also until the publisher saw they were used to prop up a table and began charging for them.

It's a little of both I believe.

You can't buy that day at your favorite fishing spot when for some unknown reason they are attacking your usual bait at such a rate you have to avoid casting so you can pause to eat a sandwich.

Yet my favorite fishing rods are a bit more expensive than similar variants that are different and in many cases somewhat less refined.

Unless you work for a little over a year feeding and tending a cow, kill and process it. A steak is going to be more expensive than a bag of tofu.

I like Michelin maps. Discovered them on my first of two ever trips to France. Did some great exploring both times using them as our guide.
