ya i realized that. i figured that since he was a major who always complained about colonels during the show that might have been one of the true facts he adopted into the show when he worked with the writers. i do really need to read the book. he is a major in my mind whether or not he achieved the rank of colonel.

He was awarded that I believe upon his release as a POW at the end of the war. He was a hard living badass and a hero. NOT being at war killed him....sad.
