Two Los Angeles Police Department officers were fired after playing Pokemon Go while on duty. The LAPD agents ignored an active robbery to instead catch a Snorlax in the Niantic mobile title.

[...]

Incredibly the terminated officers claimed they weren’t actually playing Pokemon Go on duty and were instead driving around to just take “pictures” of the Pokemon for friends in their group. When asked why one of them could be heard saying the Togetic was “fighting back”, the agent responded, “in order to take the picture, occasionally, the creature will fight.”

In the court documents, the two former public servants admit that they left their patrol location in search of a Snorlax. Despite their overall defense, the Los Angeles Police Department ended up terminating both employees due to playing the Niantic app while at work during a robbery.

You’re wrong… according to USA Today..

While the two officers didn't catch the robbers, court documents say the pair apparently captured the Snorlax, a fictional creature known as "the sleeping Pokémon."

So at least they can take that accomplishment with them to their next interview.

This is truly pathetic.

What makes this worse?

The incident happened in 2017… and only now, 5 years later, is their firing being upheld by the court.
The officers sued and appealed the firing and this took nearly five FUCKING years for the appeal to be processed and the firing decision to be ratified.

How much money did the government have to spend to defend the firing decision? I believe in worker’s rights, and workers should have the right to appeal questionable firing decisions that have illegal motives…. but when it’s so obvious the appeal should be fast-tracked and ratified and the government should be able to recoup losses from stupid appeals. If it takes 5 years to fire cops for actions like this…

I was about to say, surely the story here is that people are still this mad about Pokemon Go in 2022.

in the US & canuckistan, police unions are usually quite strong and well funded. am guessing that is most likely why it took so long to get rid of these lazy fucks. it probly didn't hurt their case any that Trump was potus for most of those 5 years, either...

It is a shame. I wonder how many black babies these police were able to murder during the years of bureaucratic foot-dragging.

- I agree the strong unions are a factor… the problem is not the fact that these unions are strong, rather that they are corrupt and make decisions to protect and support people even when everyone KNOWS they are at fault and employment should be terminated.

Honestly the punishment for abrogation of duty like this should be more severe than employment termination… but I’d settle for a speedy firing.

- I disagree that Trump as POTUS had anything to do with this. At his type of problem existed before Trump and will exist after Trump. It’s a local issue… the President is not a factor. Mentioning Trump in relation to this case only politicizes the issue, and that doesn’t help.
