I have just resigned from my job of 14 years managing an Independant Supermarket with the highest turnover in the state.

I asked for a pay rise and the owner said "I sleep well at night knowing I pay you the right amount"

Fucking bullshit you 'out of touch' tight asshole .. the store earns $120000 GP per WEEK !!!.. and i bet he pisses $10000 per week up a wall.....

Within 14 hours after this conversation on Thursday I had 2 interviews, one paying 5000 more that I was on.... the other paying 15000 more, with a 3 monthly bonus and extra holidays...

Guess which job I have accepted?

This is what I sent my current soon to be EX boss......

I have told more than one person that sometimes it is necessary to leave an organization (or business or place) to be:

1) better paid (compensated), and
2) truly appreciated for what you do.

To get better pay and LESS work, NICE..!

It’s one thing for the owner to refuse/deny a raise.

If he really said “I sleep well at night knowing I pay you the right amount.” he’s just a dickhead.

He’s likely going to have to pay your replacement more than he would’ve had to pay you to keep you AND this replacement will take months to get up to speed and be fully effective. It’s quite possible he will hire new lose one or two people before he finds a ‘permanent’/long term replacement.

-----------Well...to be fair....Suppose The Owner sleeps well with unwillingly giving you a few cases of certain liquid containers in your last few weeks, that mysteriously end up at your retirement party... ...That is if those items are sold at your location...I think in Canada they have separate stores for that kind of stuff...

I did not know I was expected to provide a thesis on the role of work in the world. I was merely responding to the situation that Raz has shared with us. Let me attempt to be succinct here.

I will first say that OF COURSE I agree with ConfSS that one should enjoy the work that one does. There is the often-quoted idea that if one does a job, one enjoys that he never does actual work. It goes:

“Do what you’ll love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.”

Here is what other wise men have said about work:

How is tge new job?

so far so good.. its a bigger job than I thought. The database is a mess, prices are all over the place, and GP is not correct.

but.. I am making progress.
