Speeding Ticket

Postby mookiemcgee on Sat Jan 29, 2022 1:30 pm

It's been a long long time since I've received a speeding ticket, but it happened recently. I went online to pay it, and it's giving me the option to divert and do traffic school... but the cost if i choose that option is actually 30% higher than just paying the ticket lol. WTF is this? Feels like extortion, if I pay the cops a little extra I won't have points on my record. I guess I was mistakenly under the impression that if I did the traffic school option I wouldn't have to pay the fine, not pay even more.

This exact thing happened to me. Got the ticket in the mail from a photo radar. I was taking my son to the emergency room as he'd just blown out his ACL.

First ticket in over 35 years. Fuckers

Anyway, my insurance guy said TAKE THE CLASS. If they saw a speeding ticket on my insurance renewal it would cost much more than the fucking $40 class.

Fuckers.

I did the class then magically I got a $60 refund from the city I paid the $165 ticket to, even though they said they wouldn't refund.

WTF? Fuckers

I've had two moving infractions in the last two years but, if you look at my record, it's perfect and clean!

    - The first was for making a right turn at 4:12 p.m. on a street where right turns were banned between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
    - The second was for texting while driving. (Actually, I wasn't texting, I was reading CNBC on my phone. But whatever.)

In both cases I got a lawyer who negotiated a plea deal where I'd plead no contest if the prosecutor agreed to drop the charges and file charges against me for not wearing a seat belt instead. (I was wearing a seat belt but a ticket for not wearing a seat belt is not a moving infraction so doesn't impact insurance rates.) I also had to do a $50 seatbelt awareness course which was one hour. But you can do it online and the quiz is just common sense so I clicked through it and finished it in like 5 minutes.

All told, with the lawyer and seatbelt school, the two times combined cost me about $400 more than if I had just paid the two tickets. However, that's probably the same amount I'd be out amortized over a year with increased insurance rates had I just paid the tickets. And, over two years, then the savings really start to pile up.

This lawyer's business model is interesting --- you pay him $150 and he guarantees he'll get the traffic ticket either dismissed or dropped to a non-moving violation or he'll refund you $100. I've talked to a couple people who've used him and he's always successful. I assume that prosecuting traffic ticket appeals is a numbers game so the prosecutor just doesn't even bother if the defendant sends an attorney and rolls over to the first deal.

The punchline is that it was for vehicular homicide.
