Brexit chicken comes home to roost

Postby Dukasaur on Sun May 08, 2022 8:48 pm

The historic victory of Sinn Fein in yesterday's Ulster election would have been completely unimaginable a few years ago.

Brexit has made it clear that England no longer give a shit what happens to Ulster. This is quite likely the beginning of the end of a relationship that has survived half a millenium.

Don't jizz your pants just yet. Sinn Fein got 29% of the vote, which happens to be larger than any other one party but is pretty much the same as SF got last time. The reason SF are now in first is because a lot of people abandoned the DUP, but overall more people voted for unionist parties than nationalist ones.

This election's success story was the increase in support for the Alliance Party, whose position on a border poll is indifference.
