the lake in Northern Ireland seems extraneous.

our map currently shows two lakes in northern ireland.

the larger one is lough neagh, which is an instantly-recognisable feature of any northern ireland map. like lake winnipeg on the canada map, it doesn't have any part in the gameplay, although it serves as a landmark.

the smaller one on the right is strangford lough, which is supposed to have an outlet to the sea at its south-east corner (and therefore isn't actually a lake). can we redraw the irish coastline at strangford lough to reflect this?

Becasue the double ames in scotland are the actual names of those ares and so far as i know there isnt any other relevent usable name.

Yes but for simplicity on a CC map, things like that can be altered. Longer names take up more space, make maps harder to read and have to be abbreviated to fit in the game logs and drop down menus. To avoid all that, using one of the names is fitting, since people would still know is the same area! For example, North Carolina is the "proper name" for a state here in the US, but calling it Carolina is acceptable - people still know which area you're talking about. If I went up to an Englishman and asked about the "Lothian area," he'd know generally where I was referring to.

Double names ARE NOT NEEDED and only cramp and clutter the map and game logs.

I agree long names are not appropriate if avoidable but i have never heard Lothian & Borders described as anything else including when i lived in Scotland a few years ago.

Comparing it to North Carolina is not a valid coparison as Carolina is a common abrev. for this a more valid comparison would be New York - I have never heard this referred to as either "New" or "York" and putting just "New" or "York" on a map when referring to New York would not be correct. If gimil can include this region's correct title without interfering with game play then he should do so.

TBH - I don't think you're in a position to argue - as you have no attachment to the UK, GB, Scotland etc - If the scottish/british people say that this must be like this - then I think it should...

Your argument that long names cramp and clutter is fluad. There is a number of maps that have similar and even longer names.

Rebelman i have attempted to put cork harbour in, bit the pixel dimension of the boarders doesnt allow this to happen effectivly, i have decided not to included it.

That said, there really is no proof of correlation or even foul play in that. I suggest a poll as well. I think you'll be surprised how many here are willing to screw gameplay (which the current names here aren't even doing) to have the correct geography.

gimil please don't make generalisations about chat regulars and i would love to know what you are referring to if its the crossword map you are way off the mark. I agreed with you on the names but a poll may be a reasonable option to resolve this remaining issue

Noted, again, the original author of the map requested this revamp and personally choose gimil.

The bit I don't understand here is how you're supposedly revamping this map to make it more geographically correct yet, essex the place I am from is still completely in the wrong position. Why even bother change the names to more geographically correct ones if you're gonna neglect certain areas. It would be much better if you use what you began with as the territory name: essex and cambs.

I am in full agreement with you myself. The major complaints and whining about the original map were nearly all geographical and I think that needs to be #1 to everything else.

Not everyone is taking that view, which is why I think we need a poll. But gimil is gone for another 6 days and I don't want to start one without his consent as he may have a reasonable argument against it.

Claiming the chat folks rig polls is not reasonable, so lets not start that again.
