Should this be considered cheating?

Postby spearfish on Sat Apr 05, 2008 8:17 pm

Lately I've noticed a very bush league tactic being used in 1v1 freestyle games. It's happened to me a couple of times, and I figured I might as well get some opinions on it.

It goes along these lines. I threw in some details to help explain it, but obviously all games are different. And no, this is not a specific scenario that happened to me.........
It's a freestyle game, 1v1. Your opponent has just secured Europe! Without a bonus yourself, and even in territories, it could spell your doom if he's able to hold onto it for a few turns. Unfortunately he's also been able to secure many of the terri's outside of Europe, and other entrances are blocked off by neutrals. You do not have enough firepower to break him this turn, he's bound to get the bonus, which will only secure his European domination. So what do you do? You load up on Brazil, to go through North Africa (which belongs to your opponent), and into South Europe. You end your forts with a smug look, you have 6 on Brazil and he only has 3 on North Africa, and 1 on South Europe.

But seeing this plan, your opponent fortifies North Africa up to 7. No way you can stop him now..... unless..... you do what you always do in 1v1 freestyle games! You about ten minutes until you're sure your opponent has given up on you taking your turn (or at least has stopped sitting there refreshing), deploy your 4 on Brazil, and conquer North Africa + Southern Europe. Ordinarily, your opponent would have been able to start his turn while you were doing this and receive the five bonus armies, but now? Nope!

This is a tactic I feel should be against the rules. But I'm curious as to what you guys think.

So - you are saying that freestyle games should be outlawed? because that is about all I see in every freestyle game that I play (which is only when I am not paying attention when I join) - I don't like freestyle for this reason -
My self esteem is high enough, that I don't have to post stats here ;)

You can't blame anyone for waiting for their turn. Thats a big part of freestyle: taking your turn whenever you want in that 24 hours.

Why would he start his turn if he knew the other guy would get his bonus?
Go play sequential. It solves every problem you listed.

Wait, you think it's wrong that the person in your scenario couldn't hold Europe? Please tell me I've misread.

Let's clear up some things.

This site is for the casual gamer correct? (minus of course, speed game options). I for one play while I do homework, study, work, and whenever i can steal a moment, for me, freestyle fits my RL perfectly. Because I play at sparatic times, anyone who aquires a bonus against me either has to rely on perfect defensive dice or refresh for countless minutes if not hours, (the latter rarely happens with the exception of funnyboi)

So, let's look at what you're issue is regarding. There are 2 styles of play that can be implemented in RISK. You have your quick developpers, which grow slowly dispersing their men and accomplishing little short term goals. Then you've got your rapid expanders that extend as fast as they can to reap the quick addition of troops (normally followed up by a wait to see what the opponent does).

Rapid expanders are normally tempted to take the europes, the NA's or africas of the map. In leaving only 1s most of the time, obviously they are counting on begining the turn right away and reaping that quick 5 man bonus to outwait the opponent the next round.

The problem is not with a player who is waiting to move hun. This leads to people suspecting another player of trickery everytime they have to leave the computer under a certain circumstance. The problem is with the player who does not cover the ground they take. In freestyle (as in sequential) you can never "expect" of your opponent that they move to accomodate your desire. If you take europe, be able to defend it next round, whenever that may be.

As a player who takes a big bonus with little or no defense, you have 2 options...

- you can try to talk your opponent into moving while you're there.
- You can try to gather information on when your opponent plans to move.
- You constantly refresh, if it is important enough to you that you be there when your opponent starts, then you should have no problem putting your RL issues on delay to wait, if you dont want to delay your RL issues, then feel free to do what you want but you cant expect your opponent to fold their RL issues to bend to your will.

and of course theres the guarantied.... END YOUR TURN FIRST!!! :P

This is one aspect of play exclusive to Freestyle and outlawing the tactic seems absurd to me. Sometimes this exact manuver occurs without even trying... I've finished my turn and been afc all day thinking I was gonna get stomped before returning home, only to find many hours later that a new round has begun... and nobody has taken a turn yet.

Repeating what's been said already... Play sequencial if you don't appreciate the quirks of freestyle.

Let's clear something else up. If you want to assure yourself that nobody will read your entire long post, write it in pink. Then they'll be angry the second they start and their head will hurt about 1/4 of the way through.

Oh, and as to the issue at hand, once it became obvious to me that some of the "strategies" of freestyle was to either camp in front of your computer all day and night to make sure you could start your move and/or wait until 3am to make your move, I stopped playing that format.

Sounds like you should as well.

nope we are just THAT funny or THAT annoying. maybe you didn't see the original groundhog day reference/joke by the original poster... and if you have to explain a joke to someone, that person just isn't really meant to get it, right?-0
