cooks and the forum

Cooks do visit the forum a lot, but many a time, they are not listened to. Many people think were small folk, just playing games to deadbeat, etc.

Those who play for scoring and points, etc. These people are the ones whom you'll see most on the forum. This is why many of them have high ranks and positions.
Those who play only for fun, not caring for points, rank, etc, like me. These people you'll see mainly in the games. Sometimes, they won't talk at all, much less the forums

I agree with greenoaks here. Some players are here just to enjoy playing risk and risk-like games, others are here to compete against others and take part in the community.

I agree with greenoaks here. Some players are here just to enjoy playing risk and risk-like games, others are here to compete against others and take part in the community.

Here are some facts regarding cooks:

1. There are currently 2001 cooks on the site, thats Roughly 1/10th of registered members.
2. Many cooks like myself only play CC to have fun. Were not out there for points or rank or that stuff. I admire the great players such as AAfitz and Blitz, but to me, to play the game is more important then winning.
3. Many cooks are not quitters. Many of them lose a lot of games and still continue to have fun and should be placed in the same category as those who play a couple of games and then quit

This sounds more like rationalizing one's low score than anything else. Well, that and a less than subtle jab at those on the first few pages of the rankings. My guess is that the number of people with relatively high ranks (say 2000 or above) who got that way because they're hyper concerned about points to the extent that it alters their actions at CC is much, much lower than many think.

It's as if it is beyond the realm of possibility that certain players just win more often than others because they don't make as many stupid moves or are able to see imaginative ways to seize games that others miss. It seems as if anyone who plays remotely often but hasn't been able to increase in rank has convinced themselves that you have to sell your soul to move up.

I play to have fun. I just happen to think it is more fun to win than to lose. This doesn't mean I'm prepared to troll around looking for triples games against noobs. Honestly, "winning" a game like that doesn't seem to be much fun. I suppose this is where I would rationalize that's why I'm only at 2300 as opposed to 3000 but I know better. I play enough guys ahead of me in the ranks to realize that many are simply better at this game than I am.

My theory on why cooks in particular don't post as much is because many don't take the game all that seriously. I certainly see that in their game play and it goes a long way to explain why they lose so often. These are the players who, when they do something drastically stupid in game play that hands the game to someone on a platter, remind you "Hey many, it's cool, it's just a game." Of course, in respect to the "it's just a game" part, they are 100% correct. With respect to the "it's cool" part, not so much. Yes, it's just a game, and one that is much, much more fun when nobody on the board is screwing it up for everyone else.

So, why would somebody who doesn't think twice about his/her actions in game play bother to head here to post.

Certainly the posters are skewed towards higher ranked players and it seems pretty obvious to me why. To get better at this game, you need to think about this game. You need to find yourself walking the dog and suddenly have an epiphany about how you're going to close out the discworld game you're in. These are the same types of people who spend a bunch of time here either sharing ideas, teaching ideas, or getting bent out of shape over this or that.

Completely matter of factly. To be honest, I was a bit annoyed by the tone of what was being implied. That cooks were somehow playing the game for all the right reasons and those with higher ranks were "worried about points". It's really BS actually.

Those who tend to geek out on-line come to the forums. Those who don't, don't. If the cooks were "too busy playing the game" then why haven't they figured out the subtleties of when to go balls out, when to lay low, etc in the games themselves.

generalization after generalization. all i know is, i play for fun and to break up the lulls in my
work day and chasing my 3 1/2 year old. if i don't have a turn to take, i will hit the forum to see
what is going on, and if there is anything funny posted. i am not obsessed with my score or my
points, it is mostly social. i play on teams with one of my best friends i have had since jr. high,
and a very few others i have met on CC. i think it is absurd to say that people with rank play for the
wrong reasons. i'm not that great of a player, but i have a pretty good win percentage, and i think
that is mostly due to the fact that i play 98% team games. so, people are here for different reasons,
and the fact that someone is higher than a cook doesn't mean that person doesn't enjoy the site for
the same reasons a permanent cook does.-0

well, cooks are 1/10 of registered players, but if you factor out abandoned acounts, it turns out 25% of active players are cooks. I spent a while on this statistic one night, even taking a random sampling of about 80 new recruits and about 160 cooks, cadets and privates to find how many of them haven't played a game in months. That's why I tend to throw that statistic around so much, because I went through a great deal of trouble to get it .

Its not that I dont care about rank...its just imperfect and meaningless.

I post on these boards to garner information or to be friendly.

Being a cook is such a transient affair. Lately Ive played doubles wich has helped rank but I still fluctuate between the tree it seems.

While I am sure there are exceptions, if rank were an indication of how good a player is then a top ranked player should be equally as good 8 vs 1 as they are in teams. That is not the case.

This whole thread of people trying to figure out why cooks dont post is amusing at best. We al dont work with tyhe same thought process.

I get quite a few cooks in my games cause I host mostly public 8 player Term. games. Everyone has got a shot, but......
Somehow the cooks just don't win, there are constant bad moves. Even when there is a huge leg up where any other seargant would sweep the board they wait one more round or like this http://www.conquerclub.com/game.php?game=2122222 where he crashed into me the first round and could've had me if I didn't start chatting and convincing him to not attack. It somehow worked. I have seen a cook take aussie, africa and have double the armies of anyone with six players left and holding many cards and he builds up more instead of taking the win. It is pretty regular to see cooks do well, but then miss a key opportunity in escalating. Maybe they are just messing with us and making the games interesting.

So, don't get me wrong, one of the best thing about my games is the cooks who join. That circus with vinnie and jim was great and you didn't have a clue what might happen. Nothing like a 4 or 5 hund. pointer in a terminator game to make you watch your back. I love it and hope I didn't offend any cooks at all. Ah, they don't read this anyway This is just what I have seen so far and that is all.

My guess on the forums is that most cooks are younger, maybe under 13 yrs and don't have an interest with the social aspect of forums. At a younger age it is perhaps not to interesting.

Oh, and I don't have many cooks loosing turns. Just noobs

I'll give you imperfect, but not meaningless. Imperfect because there are certainly players who have managed gain high rank by either questionable methods or by specializing on certain types of game play.

Of course, even those players who've gotten high ranks because they've mastered a very specific format have had to by default gotten pretty good at the game in general.

However, for all it's imperfections, I really have to say that, by and large, I am rarely surprised by the level of play considering one's rank. I can think of precious few times when I've been in a game with someone at or below 1000 (provided that they're not new to the site) where that player has not been among the weakest players on the board. Similarly, I've learned that it is rather safe to assume that anyone at or around 2000 is, at very least, competent (but often much more than that).

Those in the mid to high teens are perhaps the only ones out there that can make an argument that they're better players than their ranks indicate. Perhaps it's because they're addicts and end up losing a ton of points in 1v1 speed games or something like that.

I'm sorry if this comes off as arrogant but this is not the first time (in fact, not even the first in this particular thread) where somebody of cook/cadet rank has dismissed the notion of rank being a reflection of skill.

After all, as a whole, we are all subject to the same luck, be it dice, cards, drop, or even unexpected moves by opponents. If, after you've played enough games, you are stuck below 1000, I think it is only fair to start to question what you are doing in the game. Why are you never the last one standing? I know this much, the first step is to figure out how not to be the first guy taken out. If you're always one of the last three left, your odds certainly improve. I'm happy to say that I'm usually one of those 3 and that is amongst the reasons I'm not a cadet. It isn't because I'm selective with my game choices. I play teams, singles, ranked games, open games, all card options, and a wide variety of maps.

I also know of plenty of other players who've earned a higher rank the exact same way.

I know that's true in my case. I just got bored recently and decided to come in and read what other people thought. I guess if anything cooks should be reading the strategy forum the most. So off I go so I don't become a cook!

I'm sorry but, stereotyping why people (yes they're people) do or don't bother to post on this forum is just silly. Segregating that concept by rank only multiplies the silly factor by about ten. It seems to me that players who are new to this site probably take a little time to aclimate to the surroundings and figure things out. Those who are already familiar with forums will certainly warm up to this one quicker and post sooner after joining. Others may be totally new to this or a bit shy and need some time to stalk around and get comfortable before joining in the conversation... but I doubt it's ever about rank.

When you consider how many players never bother to say more than GL and GG during games, it becomes even less of a surprise that more people don't contribute to this message bored. The numbers of people who don't communicate in games can't be stereotyped either.
