Sometimes you just have to "go for it" on luck and gut instinct. That and exactly how important it is that you actually conquer the territory in question is the biggest factor. The dice are full of surprises and often defy the odds, sometimes good and sometimes not. Because the dice are "random" even having the odds in your favor doesn't guarantee a successful attack.
5v1... your odds are very good, but if you lose 2 rolls to start
it's a lot tougher decision to continue with the lesser odds of
3v1... but at least they are in your favor for one more try.
3v4... obviously not so hot. Lose a pair to start and you're done,
but if you take two on the first roll your odds still are less than
50/50... because the defender wins the ties.
2v1... less than 50% for the reason stated above. But if you really
need it bad or you have good forts on the map and losing 1 more
doesn't hurt much, take a shot.
I'm sure everyone has had turns where they never lost a single army, but lacked the numbers to inflict a lot of damage and other times had BIG numbers and got totally buggered by the dice. So no calculations of the odds is going to predict with any certainty what will happen once you start your attack.
