1v1 games...your opinion wanted!

Postby MajorRT on Wed Jun 18, 2008 10:49 pm

OK, maybe it's a bad streak of luck....maybe it's me but I enjoy 1v1 games, although sometimes the drop is so unfair! In your opinion, how much does winning depend on skill? How much on luck?
Also, what is the highest rank anyone has obtained playing mostly 1v1 games? :?:

I win 68% when I go first, 59% overall. If that helps, which I'm sure it doesn't lol

i do love 1 v 1 but i it depends ALOT on the drop and dice. the highest i have been is lieutenant, and then I lose it as quick as I gained it.

These are my criterias to win in 1vs1 games.

1. Who is lucky enough to start first? ...this alone gives a game away 75% of the time.
2. Map coverage and playing experience as well as game settings ...8%
3. Skill in armies utilization such as deployment, attack & fortification ... 8%
4. Dice performance ...4%
5. The drop ...4%
6. Misc. unknown element...1%

So, even if you go 2nd at least as far as I'm concerned if you're the beneficiary of 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 then you've about 25 + 8 + 8 + 4 + 4 + 1 = 50% chance to win a 1vs1 game. So, go out there and fight ...don't give up in despair.

I don't understand why some love 1 on 1. I've tried a few times.Removes everything from what this game was created for.
It's not great.Actually it's pretty bad, there's already a game called rock/paper/scissors, why turn (eerm)"risk" into it?
Actually, bad comparison (sp?), flipping a coin on old crumble cement is more accurate. 50/50 + bumps here and there.

its highly possible to have essentialy lost a game on the drop, but you can win a few that way as well, and other times its a nice even fight, just depends, I still play 1v1 like an addict quite often

A well thought out list, but you are WAY WAY underestimating the significance of the dice performance. You can go 0-2 three times on most maps, and it compeltely undermines the first start position.

Also, the drop is WAY undervalued. Epic dice can beat the best drops, but some drops are litterally impossible to win on. This happens when someone starts with a bonus and it is protected by all neutrals. The frustrating part is that if mapmakers would just spend a few minutes thinking about 1v1 play, they could code the map drop rules to prevent this sort of thing in most cases.

Settings can't be isolated from the other factors. If you get the first drop and play unlimited fort on some maps, that's basically the game, particularly if its no cards (I'm thinking of Chinese Checkers here). On the other hand, if you play adjacent, it takes a lot of edge out of the first start.

I've thought about this question a lot. I even plotted a chart on what the win rates would look right for skill percentiles depending on how much of the game is actual "chance" and how much is skill. It' somewhere in the forum, but I don't have time to find it.

I have about a 58% win rate - always staying just shy of 2000 pts, and I think I win <10% of my games based on extrodinary dice/drop/convergence of settings with drop & first start. And I'm probably a 90 perentile player. So using my graph and enough data points like me, you could find the answer to your question.

There are guys who have very high win rates on certain maps. Probably the best known example is Benjikat on Waterloo.
My ever constant two last games seem to have no end in sight!

For me, since I play freestyle doodle no cards unlim speed 1 on 1's, that's number one. I take a bonus, then use my fortifying skillzz to win :D Works the great majority of the time.

I like the idea of 1v1... but quit playing them after winning 100% of games where I go first and a few where I've gone second. Didn't do freestyle 1v1 and maybe that would help balance the game, as cards and drop helps a bit. Kind of got bored with it as going first is always a huge advantage that nobody has ever overcome when I get to initiate the game and it's not like a chess match where there is potential for making a comeback once the balance of power tips.

I do think 1v1 as a team game where each player controls multiple armies in a sequencial setting might be a cool development.

I love playing 1vs1 but usually on maps like AoR or new world where the first vs second is less of an issue.

Look at my game history, I'm playing 1v1 freestyle exclusively and going first is basically paramount to a win. I think I'm on a 19-20 win streak, with my last loss coming because of some pretty lackluster dice against some great dice for my opponent. I was in a real bad spot in a current game I'm in, lost 10 armies straight to nothing over the first 2 rounds and that should have been game, but my opponent decided to miss a turn or two, and now I'm actually in position to win it.

Being the first to go is a big part of 1 v 1 wins, but the if the dice are awful for 1st player, it doesn't much matter. The maps where you own 12, 15, 18 territories are huge to be able to go on first. if the dice and drop are not in your favor, there is a pretty good chance you are toast anyway though.

Personally, I like 1 v 1 being that I am usually pretty busy and it is a nice quick break for me. I like just sitting down and doing a fairly simple game without TOO much thought about 6 other players. I like the 1 v 1 with my morning coffee ;) However, I am currently trying to expand my horizons. I don't do well with freestyle, not enough time to watch my games, but I bet that would make a difference in 1 v 1.

Also, playing somebody a lot 1 v 1 is a nice way to get to know more people on here. I usually have better chat in 1 v 1.

I haven't played a whole lot of 1v1 games, primarily because I find it's the format that has the most to do with luck. Certainly there are better ways than others to play it and I'll be the first to admit that it took me a few games to figure that much out but, assuming both players know the basic deal, it's luck. When I get a good drop and, more importantly, the dice to match, I win. When I don't, I lose. That doesn't interest me very much.

You're all wrong! WRONG!

1v1 played speed freestyle is the best. There are so many general tactics that you can apply to every map that make it fun. Sure, the drop and dice can mean a lot but with such maps as Feudal War and larger maps (NYC, Middle East etc) it gives less and less advantage to have good dice. If you look at my last few games, they've all been 1v1 speed freestyle and I win every one, plus my win rate on Feudal No Cards Adjacent is 80%... you have players like MOBAJOG, Gwaahjo and Torter_Of_Worlds who do awesome on 1v1, and to be honest for me it is risk in its best form - no teaming, arguing, suiciding and giving the game to others... it is just a battle of wits against the other person.

I play largely 1v1, which is why my game total is so high.

I like the challange of doing the best I can, despite any odds. I win, I lose ... but the challange is to, even when losing, hold out as long as I can.

I like 1v1 because they are over relatively quickly, though I can rarely gaurantee "real time" (I have kids & a husband who is a volunteer fire chief, among other things). Also, I get more of a chance to actually chat with more folks. It is rather hard to hold a real conversation when 5 other people are playing.

In some maps, such as Pearl Harbor, the first person has a huge advantage (though I can still overcome it sometimes). In others, the advantage is minimal. Drop almost always matter more in 1v1 than those with more people.

One thing, though, the strategies for 1v1 are NOT always the same as for multiple players.

im fairly 50/50 when it comes to 1vs1 though i lose more points than i gain. i was a big 1vs1 fan when i first joined, but gradually play less of it due to the big dependence on luck/drop/dice.

i still like a game here and there just for some fun.

choose a map like waterloo, where there are loads of bonus's on offer and also bombardments avaiable. starting Luck is greatly reduced and then only hte dice can f*ck u!

There's a reason high ranked players don't play 1v1 unless they can stack the deck heavily in their favor (freestyle - insuring the first turn, playing highly specialized maps where most people have no clue what they are doing). 1v1 is fun...but it relies MORE on luck than probably any other game type. Because of this it is the most frustrating game type and something you want to avoid if you want to keep your points (and hair).

I got my current rank by playing 1v1.

I have an 80% win ratio on my favorite 1v1 map... and I play open games that anyone can join. It all comes down to how well you know the map, your strategy, and your opponents mistakes.

In 1v1 the only one you have to rely on or blame is yourself... if you win 99% of the time its because you are a better player.

p.s. most of my 20% losses on that map are from forgetting I start a game and then popping in 3 turns later to an opponent with a bonus of 20 haha... and it's usually a cadet.
