Why not have a forum(or part of forum) that's not moderated. Perhaps make it community hosted.
Not into Bugs & Suggestions!! Please no!!
(Seriously the thread is fine where it is.)
The least moderated forum here, as far as I can tell, is Flame Wars. Though I can see that wouldn't suit the general purpose of "unmoderated debate".
Outside Flame Wars the site owners/leaders have decided that they want the site moderated in line with the
Forum Guidelines and they ask members to volunteer their time to join a moderation team to do that.
It's a team I have only just joined, but I can assure you that the whole raison d'etre of the moderation team is to maintain and improve the site which we're all arguing so passionately about and in the process confirming that we care passionately about. I would suggest that, without moderation, the site would soon decay into something which we wouldn't care for in the same way and would happily leave without stopping to consider whether our freedom to choose was something we wished to exercise or not.
The
Forum Guidelines and their consistent implementation is something that the site leaders - and the volunteer members they have asked to assist them - have a vested interest in - as demonstrated by their ownership/leadership or volunteering of their time. Where those guidelines are flawed, inconsistent in themselves, or inconsistent in their implementation
no-one - no mod, no specific mod, no site owner - has anything to gain from failing to address that. And it is my experience, albeit relatively minimal to date, of the site owners/leaders and the volunteer team they have assembled that where there is inconsistency or improvement to be made they want it to be achieved as much as everyone else does.
There have been off-shoot externally hosted CC forums, though of course with no official CC moderation or sanction, in the past - I'm sorry I have no links and don't know if any are still operating or, in fact flourishing - but the reason we're discussing this so passionately
here is because this is where we want to be ... isn't it?
