LIMIT signatures download times

Postby PLAYER57832 on Fri Jun 27, 2008 7:44 pm

Specifics:
Limit the time to download a person's signature.

There already is a size limitation, but some folks are layering or ??? so that it takes forever to download their forum sigs. I don't know if you would need to limit the dataspace or what the parameters would be, but I don't think it should be that difficult.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
Speed things up.

It is quite annoying to have to wait 5 minutes or more (and I have broadband) for someone's signature to download , especially when they post more than once. I have already added at least one person to my ignore list solely for this reason.

The only real reason for a sig like that is to annoy people. Let's just do away with it ... PLEASE!!!!

the largest sig i saw around here is 6.7MB (kaplowitz)
this one:
Image
it takes a few seconds the first time to load it then it's always instant as it is already cached ;)
tested it on 3 diffrent internet connections, 2 of them being wireless and i never experieced a slowdown bigger than 3-5 seconds. so if you have to wait for 5 minutes or more then perhaps your broadband is not so ... umm... broad ;)

plus there's no need to put people on ignore or impose limits when you can simply right click the image and block it.
get ABP (adblock plus) for firefox. it's wonderful

There are some quite a bit larger than that, though I guess it was actually 3 minutes, not 5.

If you clear your cache frequently, as I do, Or visit multiple threads, you have to download it every time.

Not everyone uses or should have to use Firefox, though I know it is popular.
Some people even still have dial-up.

There just is no need for a huge signature like that.

The two I found most annoying even called their signatures annoying... Point being, even if everyone is happy now, this is escalating and at some point will become annoying to most folks.

even if it is on multiple threads it's still downloaded once.
and i'm pretty sure IE7 can also block images ;)

but you actually made me curious about the size. who's sig is bigger than that?
also ieven if it still takes 3 minutes not five it's still too much for a broadband connection. 3 minutes=180 seconds. this means that the sig above is downloaded at a rate of 37kb per second. that's crapband not broadband  or perhaps it is broadband but it is slowed down by your hamster powered computer

I'm currently on my poor little laptop (pretty old too) and on high speed...and scrolling is rather jagged because of the above signatures!

When one is on a page, I'm fine with it. But repeated post of signatures on the same page (both in general and in this case) is annoying...due to the choppy scrolling it leaves me with! :D

Even if you set the above as the maximum allowed ... it would help.

As for others, the sig in question substantially slows down page loading time for me.

Surely someone with some technical acumen can take a swing at that sig and make it smaller than 6.7 megs.

One in particular actually calls itself "another annoying sig" ... which pretty well speaks for itself, I think.

Just block sigs altogether if you're having trouble. They never bothered me at home, by I started using a different (OLD) computer, and they're a hassle. I don't think I've lost anything by not seeing annoying pictures people like.

My thoughts exactly. A quick click in the settings and all sigs are gone forever, lovely. :D

If you go to "control panel" > "board settings" > "edit display options" and there you find a yes/no for "display signatures".
Will hide all forum sigs.

Note that it's also not possible for the site to check filesizes of Sigs - as they are all hosted off site.

You could disable signatures in your board preferences under the Control Panel. ;)
