I don't get what damage is being done, really? So long as people refrain from personal attacks, no one is getting hurt.

And yes, I really am disappointed in this site, for what happened to WICKED. As far as I'm concerned, she is one of us. And from everything that I personally have witnessed, she was by far my favorite MOD.

But at the same time, I am not not enjoying my games. I don't think the site has been tainted. There's some duelality there. If that's the/a word.

People aren't/weren't refraining from personal attacks though. In fact, you have a personal attack in your sig.

You honestly have no idea? Let's see then...

It amazes me to find an intelligent person who fights against something which he does not at all believe exists. --Mohandas Gandhi

If atheism spread, it would become a religion as intolerable as the ancient ones. --Gustave le Bon

You think you are too intelligent to believe in God. I am not like you. --Napoleon Bonaparte

I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.--Abraham Lincoln

My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust? If the whole show was bad and senseless from A to Z, so to speak, why did I, who was supposed to be part of the show, find myself in such violent reaction against it? A man feels wet when he falls into water, because man is not a water animal: a fish would not feel wet. Of course, I could have given up my idea of justice by saying that it was nothing but a private idea of my own. But if I did that, then my argument against God collapsed too--for the argument depended on saying that the world was really unjust, not simply that it did not happen to please my private fancies. Thus in the very act of trying to prove that God did not exist--in other words, that the whole of reality was senseless--I found I was forced to assume that one part of reality--namely my idea of justice--was full of sense. Consequently atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.--C.S. Lewis

Oh I see. You confuse "personal attack" with "argument against a viewpoint".

Ooh, fun!

muy_thaiguy wrote:It amazes me to find an intelligent person who fights against something which he does not at all believe exists. --Mohandas Gandhi

We aren't fighting against "god", just like we aren't fighting against "zeus." We're fighting against people who try to tell us we're going to live in misery for eternity, just because we don't believe in "god" or "zeus." Fighting the idea, not the nonexistant entity. A rare lapse in reason from Gandhi.
If atheism spread, it would become a religion as intolerable as the ancient ones. --Gustave le Bon

I don't understand...? Would Gustave care to explain why, so that I have something tangible to counter?
You think you are too intelligent to believe in God. I am not like you. --Napoleon Bonaparte

Everyone thinks that they're right; nobody believes that what they believe is wrong. Napoleon thought he was too intelligent to deny the Church. He is exactly like us, except that he cares not to discuss any reasoning. If that wanting to back up your beliefs with proof is a detestable trait, then... all scientific progress is worthless, and we might as well stop using our microwaves and our CD players. Just typical "anti-intellectualism", where you can say, "you think you're smart, so I don't have to discuss things with you." So did Napoleon Bonaparte strive to be dumb?
I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.--Abraham Lincoln

The sky is beautiful, true. that hardly means anything when we're trying to prove that the same being that created the beautiful sky, also magically impregnated a woman 2000 years ago, made the sea split 3000 years ago, and made a woman out of a rib 4000 years ago. Appreciating life doesn't necessitate that your exact vision of life is true. I find life beautiful, and I'm glad it's not just some giant, manufactured test of our worthiness. Life would be pretty worthless and mundane, if Heaven and/or Hell really awaited us.
My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? The "the universe is unjust" argument is far from the best argument to make. The better thing is... what evidence is there that there is a supernatural being that says Using His Name in Vain sends you to Eternal Hellfire? Why should we believe in this just because Father Miller says so, and he only believes this because Father Wayne told him?
Imagine two hypothetical universes. One with gravity, one without. It would be easy to tell which one you're in, just toss a coin and you'd see it fall or not. Now, imagien two hypothetical universes, one where a supernatural being created everything and guides every action, without ever becoming tangible, and another where on one of a googol planets, there is a 1-in-a-googol chance occurrence that led to something unique and beautiful. How do you tell which universe you are in? Until we find a way of telling which universe we are in, until we find a way of discovering the origin of life, then we're stuck with it being a fascinating mystery.

Can we keep playing? I love intelligent discussion, even if it's with famous people in history. It's so much better than trolling, spamming, and flaming.

I believe Matroshka was commenting on the twill-ego quote that was recently removed. But if you want to discuss this in Chatterbox, you know there are plenty of us who will. We like you more than Gregrios and his ilk anyhow.
