Arthur Mullard: Interloper Or Duck? [Locked]

heh! i thought we needed something uncontentious to cogitate on.

I have been participating in the Foundry (by talking nonsense, mostly in the stunning Archipelago map) for a little while now.
After the Classic debacle i felt i should check it out more and keep an eye on their evil machinations!

While there, i have been peeking at the progress of the Brazil Revamp and i have to say the choices are absolutely glorious works of art!

They show a degree of creativity and aesthetic manipulation which i feel would grace any board!

Now i was one of the strongest defenders of the Classic... when the site ballsed-up with the horrific polka-dot nightmare. It was badly handled (sorry Lack) and the community was brought to the table too late to feel part of that change.

My point is.. if we could ALL be included in the voting and decision making process but also with the choice to keep the existing map after submission of Updates (much as with the extraordinary Brazil Update)... would you be happy and join the process?

* Edit.. it has also popped-up in conversation that maybe we could have selectable 'skins' which could toggle between the Revamp and the Existing Classic as a control panel setting (like with the colour codes.) So two players in the same game could chose to play on different versions.

i would vote no.

i like the way the brazil revamp is being handled tho. however i would be too scared that we would end up with some horrific piece of garbage. or something that looks great in theory, but just doesnt work out as well once put into action. there are plenty of maps to 'revamp'. why classic tho? is it really that bad aesthetically?

It is pretty bad aesthetically IMO. It needs some clarity and creativity infused into it. Compared to some of the newer stuff, the existing Classic map looks dated and frankly substandard. Perhaps there should be a new alongside the old, and people can choose which to play. "Classic 2.0". 8-)

I voted yes :) Classic is ugly. It would take a while to get used to, but it would be better in the long run.

I don't like all the revamps. I wish they would just stick to making new maps instead of messing with the older ones.

I agree. While some people might not find the Classic map to be as aesthetically pleasing as the newer maps, it's not exactly an eyesore. I think cartographers' time would be better spent creating new maps, rather than trying to 'fix' old ones. As the old adage goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." In my opinion, the Classic map may be a bit clunky, but it ain't broke.

in defense of those who handled the Classic color changes (i wasn't one of them), it was a far more public process than the current brazil revamp. There were weeks of public discussion around how to make Classic more colorblind friendly and to keep the army counts from blending in with the background, which they did. The Classic changes impacted far more players, and since most never stop by the Foundry when the changes went live it took most by a surprise. And there is sure to be some uproar when a new Brazil map goes live as well.

But getting back on topic, I agree that Classic is a pretty ugly map, and I have said so many times. But a new version of the Classic map would have to supplement - not replace - the old Classic, or else we would indeed have a true revolution on our hands! :?

And ultimately I agree with the posters who have said that new maps should come before revamps... if a map ain't broke, we don't really need to fix it.

i don't wish to sling blame around at all Oak (there is none)..... but certainly lessons have been learned. And more people have now voted on the revamp of the Brazil map than were even made aware of the Classic change prior to the change going live.

i think he would if it were not the majority vote.

but the best thing to do and the most sensible thing to do in order to maintain the Risk'esque board as an advert, would be to keep the existing board and have a new, 'improved' map option too.

I'm not too keen on having two Classic maps- I understand you're trying to appease the population but either revamp it or leave it alone.

That was in response to Pedro's comment to placate Lack and his need for a Risk-like board as hook for potential members.

For me, i would honestly be ok with an all new map, provided it was to the quality of the Brazil options.. and gameplay was not compromised.

however I can also not see a problem with keeping the old map to run in parallel with a revamp. .... for a pure purist hmm let me think .. someone like Robinette; she could still set-up on Classic and invite players, even if most moved to the Newer one.

There are lots of maps so what is the problem with having another? And then, as Revamps are secondary in importance, work could begin immediately on the NEW CLASSIC....

I get what you mean, but it's a little diffrent with a CC-map.

With Cola, you can still drink regular cola AND diet cola.

But in CC, you can only play the one which exists, if there is a Classic revamp you have to play the revamp, and cannot choose to play the Old one.
