Respect ...

A comment from a post over in Rules About Avatars which deserves a thread of its own ...

My personal approach is just the opposite ;)

I give people respect until they give me a reason not to. I don't necessarily expect the same from everyone else.
Events sometimes sometimes cause me to lose respect for people.

A default position of respect would do a lot for this site methinks.

I think it probably would as well. But when the general default is on the side it's currently on, those who start in your position tend to get abused.

To add on to my previous statement, I suppose I am speaking with a chatterbox bias, where we tend to get a bit heated about things, but my few trips here to GD don't offer me much solace that we are an isolated minority. The dice and point threads are a case in point.

well, I arrived here giving all respect. After much badgering from a certain mod (no longer on this site) my avatar reflected my dislike for her. I was told to remove it. But these others are ok.

Yes, but after the discussion that spawned this thread I decided to be controversial and display some suggestive genitalia in my avatar instead.

I'm absolutely thrilled, excited and completely touched by this thread... it's so wonderful and heartwarming that one of our mods considered the topic so tremendously important as to post here in GD so we can all benefit from their infinite wisdom.... someone get me a tissue...

But, I find it very DIS-respectful that the mods of late have taken it upon themselves to lock so many threads. No explanation, nothing... you go to see what has been written and, low and behold, the mods have locked it.

I think several mods are on some kind of power/control trip and seem to forget that THEY need to exhibit the same kind of "respect" that they encourage from other members.

Actually, this thread is really kind-of stupid and needs to be locked... -Stop trying to influence the masses just because someone laid a title on you and gave you some abilities.

Does that second statement seem to be totally contradictory to anyone else?

It really depends on what you mean by respect. I will give everyone the respect of common courtesy until they prove to me that they don't deserve it, but it takes something good to earn my true respect.

There are a lot of people on these forums whom I do not respect. However I save my nasty comments for flame wars, as that is what the place is for. A lot of people abuse the forums and abuse me, because they know they can get away with certain things. These little people (and no that is not a flame, just fact) are often highly ranked, and know they can get away with more than the average player (such as myself). It's just a shame these boards are so poorly moderated, as disrespect is suited for one forum and one forum only.

The thing about fora is you can judge people based on their opinions way before you even talk to them, so it's difficult to just offer up respect if they go on about making an invisible poopie as well.

I have little respect for certain people here, but that does not mean I have to flame them or be disrespectful.
Just because I do not have respect for certain people, doesn't mean I am going to run off to flame wars and rant and rave about them.
I simply chose to avoid these individuals, when I can. Or If forced to speak to them, I try to not be to uncivil. I certainly can make my lack of respect known, without disrespecting them in a harmful matter. I sometimes agree to disagree, especially when the person who is in the way, is not respectable.
I do not look for arguments, but I will make my mind known to the person in question.
Going off to flame wars, and creating a huge stink over a person, does not earn me respect, and only makes the other involved look better for it.
If I cannot talk to the person directly, and make my thoughts known, I must respect myself, and try to avoid looking like a poop dispenser.

Yes, and you will not have respect without justice. If people feel that the system in which they function is unjust towards them, they are not going to respect the powers that be, no matter what.
