I've had discussions with CA or Collusus plenty of times and it always remained civil. I've talked with Player plenty of times and never resorted into jabs. I've even responded to widowmakers with politeness when he first started the evolution-thread.

Just because I have a habit of calling ignorant retards ignorant retards does not mean I can't be civil with normal people. It's just that the ignorant retard-factor is so high in Chatter Box, especially in the times that Nappy still posted.

Okay guys, I'm not totally sure why, but PBG asked me to mod this thing so here it goes.

Overall structure:

3 mods (me, and two others with differing viewpoints [I've picked them and just have to speak with them by pm])

I'll abide by the list of user's I was given initially and as things get organized I'll add people (all three mods must approve a new member).

Forum rules will be stickied so that anyone can read and refer to them. (final version to be voted on by all initial members).

I'm not planning to cruise the threads looking for rules violations (don't have the time), so pm me or one of the other mods if someone seems to be breaking the rules. The three mods will decide if it is a valid instance and decide on the action from there (I'll have to speak with them about how we'll work that).

I'm submitting the e-ticket now

Right. That sounds like a good thing. Less bias.

I almost responded to your post, and decided you were not likely to be including me. I was ranting at john9's agreement to you. I won't apply guilt by association.

I must congratulate you on being able to debate civily and present points correctly.

If I do resort to sarcastic one liners it is because of jay's tactics: throw shit arguments until the other person wants to bang their head in, just to make it stop.

Yeah you can post a large argument and destroy his argument. He just completely ignores that and posts another, easily refutable, argument and so on. You learn to stop caring and just enjoy yourself

I like the sort of triumvirate idea, having a dictator is no good. I guess you'll appoint more people as time goes by, but I'd say keep it to a few people who are pretty "laissez-faire" with the modding.

Ughh... I hate this...

You can have as many logical skills as you want, but open-mindedness and creativity play a huge part too. When I meet some guy who gets on a high horse because of his IQ or ACT or something, obviously I don't hesitate to destroy them at their own game, because they just can't seem to respect anyone else's ideas. So when I meet atheists or fundamental Christians or whatever that try to press their irrefutable beliefs on me, of course it bugs the hell out of me. You don't see me proclaiming the superiority of people from the Midwest or blue-eyed people or anything, do you?

Pretty much all atheists think that they are smart... and I've got no problem talking with the ones that actually are and will give my ideas a bit of respect. It's the ones that aren't that are annoying. </rant> :P

OH NO SHIT SHERLOCK! This doesn't say anything about my capability of behaving in a civil manner though. I troll plenty of threads for the sheer pleasure of fucking with people, but I have shown (unlike you) that I can also debate other people who act reasonable without resorting to cheap stuff.

The fact that I post loads of bullshit all the time does not mean I can't talk sense, I just rarely see a reason to do so.

Not when the typical translation by many people of "Open-mindedness" is "accept that I'm fucking right".

Seriously, way too often logical arguments get replaced by "oh well you just hate God" or whatever bullshit counter-argument the religious come up with. The problem is that the Atheists are the ones that have to be more open-minded, while the religious people are by definition "open-minded". I'm willing to admit that there is a small possibilty that God may exist, there is a logical possibility, are you willing to admit that God might not exist?

Absolutely. Now I don't claim to be any more open-minded than anyone else, but what John said was essentially correct. Juan stated atheists win all the arguments (which isn't correct on any level) and then stated that it's not their fault they have the logical skills (which begs the question "why oppose this clan in the first place, all we are saying is that you will have to respect your opponents and restrict attacks to their statements not them personally").

When Juan states that he thinks "belonging to any religion Christian, Muslim, etc. amounts to a 50 point loss of I.Q." nobody jumps up and says how absurd that statement is. Even if we do then it's "lighten up, you should have more of a sense of humor". Which is not a defense of the original statement at all, but another attack on the target "not only are we stupid, but also we can't take a joke". If one makes a statement he should be prepared to defend it rationally in this arena. That's all it amounts to.

I'm so happy that this clan will finally be up an running soon. I for one can't wait for a debating environment devoid of people who can't string arguments together and who just ignore well thought out logical rebuttals while idly spamming off-point cliches. It'll be so nice not to have to listen to "You hate God, you will go to hell" (Jay/Gregrios), or "Liberals just insult people who don't agree with them, you fags" (Bradley/Dangerboy), or "It says I'm right in the Bible, shut up" (various/inumerable), and to be able to just have a sensible conversation for once.

Colour me excited Batman, this new usergroup is going to be a joyous little gated-community of paradise on earth... I can't wait to get involved.

Now now, I'm sure there'll be no autocracy and high-handed bigotry here. Sure, our leaders haven't been democratically elected and aren't held accountable to any kind of regulatory body... but I for one think that we'll be able to trust them not to go power-crazy or to act like little-Hitlers. No indeed, I doubt we'll need to be friends with the right people to get in here, nor to buy the online equivalent of million-dollar homes; indeed, I'm confident that every poster who sincerely pledges their wish to debate topical issues in a rational fashion will be given an opportunity to prove that stated commitment in the sub-forum, regardless of their relationship with our trusted overseers and without being prejudiced by things they may or may not have said in other more anarchic environments.

Isn't that right chaps? I'm not being too idealistic am I? It'd be such a shame if this whole organisation had become a corrupt little dictatorship before it even got running, wouldn't it?

Never you fear mpjh old boy, doubtless one of our gracious overlords will be along to confirm my sentiments shortly...

Phew, again with the Nazi references. How exactly is this any more autocratic than any other clan on the site. Isn't every clan leader free to set criteria for joining her/his clan. But hey I’ll run with it. I was asked specifically to take this clan over and mod it……me…….alone. What was the first thing I did? Share power, asking PBG and Black Elk Speaks to share the responsibilities and set up a basic set of guidelines for decisions to be made. I’ve also stated that all initial members will have the right to ratify (or ammend) the rules that we are currently working on. This isn’t exactly the groundwork for an oppressive dictatorship is it? I mean it doesn’t sound Hitler-esque to me. Not even mildly Mussolinian. Perhaps a bit Thacher-ish…..I guess, but I liked Mags anyway.

Dancing Mustard wrote:No indeed, I doubt we'll need to be friends with the right people to get in here, nor to buy the online equivalent of million-dollar homes;

Well, yeah, hopefully we'll all be friends. How do I buy the internet equivalent of a million dollar home, exactly?? You kinda lost me there, unless it was just a rhetorical device used to insinuate that I'm an elitist?

Dancing Mustard wrote:indeed, I'm confident that every poster who sincerely pledges their wish to debate topical issues in a rational fashion will be given an opportunity to prove that stated commitment in the sub-forum, regardless of their relationship with our trusted overseers and without being prejudiced by things they may or may not have said in other more anarchic environments.

Well, I dunno. I’ve expressed my sincere desire to have a sex change operation and Ball Busterz just won’t take me seriously. I’ve also stated my sincere desire to play a top notch game but I’m not being accepted into the Officers’ Mess. Those neo-nazi’s. Can you believe it, just look at how they flaunt their “standards” (sorry officers just making a point don’t pummel me senseless in the next game just to prove me wrong)

Any player of Lieutenant Rank or above can apply to join The Officers Mess. Players with high negative feedback may be refused and anyone whose behaviour is 'unbecoming an officer and a gentleman' will be banned. If members are demoted below Leiutenant, they will not join any new games till they regain officer status.

It isn’t prejudice if we are actually looking at what you have said in another environment btw. That’s looking at past behavior and using it to as a basis for prediction about future behavior. It’s about as reliable a method of prediction of human behavior as you’ll get. At least single blind observation was considered reliable when I took social-psych.

Dancing Mustard wrote:Isn't that right chaps? I'm not being too idealistic am I? It'd be such a shame if this whole organisation had become a corrupt little dictatorship before it even got running, wouldn't it?

Why is this such a big deal? Whether we become an aimless Utopia in which nothing is actually said, or we become a little dictatorship in which everyone has to toe the party line it would be expressly against the stated goal of ....well….everybody in the clan. Not to mention our hapless victims need only click unsubscribe before we march them off to the gas chambers.

clan's open btw, has been for a day now. If you're not in yet don't be offended we needed to start small so that we could organize the rules and get things off the ground. Anyone still interested in joining just pm one of us or post here.

Now now, no need to get all defensive on me.

There I was, just trying to stick up for this noble institution of which I'm proud to be applying for membership, and all I get is a goblful of retaliatory venom. No need for that old chap, I'm not the one accusing you of going mad with power, just trying to get these angry young men to understand that this is a just and upstanding organisation that'll give them a chance to do the right thing.

Why the twitchy response? Why the Nazi fixation? I feel like I reached out a helping hand only to have it bitten off by an angry terrier... I thought this place was all about the civility?
