Que?

Postby e_i_pi on Sat Sep 06, 2008 4:41 pm

So, I've recently finished a triples game on Africa, my side winning. Our team got 20 points each, so it was a nice win.

Basically, we set up in SE Coast, the Australia of Africa map, trying to create strong defensive positions. But one of our teammates just kept attacking with all his armies every single turn. We kept boosting him up all we could, but he'd attack down to the very last man, even when he was responsible for defence. This is on a no cards map. I realise someone with 596 points, languishing in cook rank, can't be the best teammate, but to *try* to lose the game turn after turn is crazy. I noticed this was bad strategy, and so did my teammate:

2008-08-21 20:55:07 - MEP [team]: EDSON pls attack east zaire from angola and enforce Kenya from Somalia.
2008-08-21 23:25:50 - edsonsepultura [team]: Sorry, I was playing mechanicaly and i don't has read the chat. I will do it your recomendations

Note the timestamps on these messages. Everyone has taken a turn, and by the time it gets to edson, he still hasn't read the game chat. We struggled to get this win - there were good opponents, but we had by far the better drop. Naturally, I give edson 2 stars for gameplay, and forego other ratings, which I think is a fair assessment of his abilities.

So, I get this email in my inbox:

Buy a portuguese dictionary and translate the message. Idiot

I quick visit to babelfish yields this:

babelfish wrote:He is as soon as vc treats the partners had helped that it to gain the game? For the visa, loyalty is article rare to find. It comes to Brazil, to learn as if it treats the partners.

Que?

Firstly, does anyone honestly think 2 stars is harsh feedback given his baheviour in the game?
Secondly, why the hell is he going on about visas to Brazil?

You won.

Dont team with him again.

Put him on foe if you wish to erase hime from your life.

There is no problem but fools like this will always be around.

The translation, roughly, is: Is this how you treat your partners that help you win a game? It seems loyalty is a quality which is hard to find. Come to Brazil, learn how to teat your partners.

I don't speak portugese, but it's similar to Spanish.
I think he says something like:
'So this is how you treat a partner that helps you win the game? It appears that loyalty is a rare thing to find. Come to Brazil and learn how to treat one's partner.'

..or words to that effect. Nothing about a visa. 'Pelo visto' = 'it seems' or 'it appears'

Maybe there was a misunderstanding due to the language...?
I don't like the rating system at all - proper feedback explaining gameplay was by far the better way to go. Better to be able to give a reason for your dis-satisfaction and the receiver the option to counter.
So, inexperienced player / language barrier....I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
You still managed a win in spite of it.

:? Keyboard has missing keys? Erm....and some randomly spaced additional ones? :?

Clearly it was just a terrible spelling day for me, heh. Close enough for the message to filter through though.
