I think you should at least give the cartographer of the map being reviewed an opportunity to say something about the map.

I'd like them to be able to say a couple paragraphs about how they envision the map being played. Then, afterwards, they are shown the review and are given an opportunity to respond to it.

That completely undermines the objectivity of the program, so the answer to that one is no. Any even though mapmakers are allowed to review other people's maps (and from the stuff in foundry may have some backdrop on a map that the general public wouldn't), I still want to minimize the outside influence.

BTW - I am going to send to the people who gave me their RW email a draft of the tester checklist and a test results form. I don't know if ultimately we'll just send around attachments and I'll manually compile them in Excel, or if we can do something more fancy with scripts and web integration. But at this stage I would just like feedback on whether you think the list / form are on target.

Thanks

Only a bit.

And i dont see why making a map is all that bad - it doesnt make me have a special bias opinion on things...

Let me refer to my decision above:

gdeangel wrote:Someone asked me why I am openning this to all ranks, and I said that I felt comfortable that we could spot questionable test reporting / reviewing because there will be redundancy (i.e., a couple of people working on each map), and if someone doesn't know what they are talking about, we'll figure it out pretty fast. And after thinking it over, the same thing should be true for mapmaker bias, so I'm prepared at this point to have a go at letting in mapmakers.

That means I'm letting mapmakers in, but they won't be allowed to rate their own maps unless we really end up short staffed, and, to the extent we have open group communications, they will be expected to respect a Chinese wall between the people who are reviewing their map(s) and keep their opinions to themselves until the review of their map is complete. This will add to the integrity of the review. After the review comes out, if anyone doesn't like it, whether they are part of this workgroup or not, they can complain to me about it. If I detect bias that anyone, mapmaker or otherwise, is giving a free pass to any map, or being unduly harsh for that matter, with other peoples maps due to bias or prejudice (and I don't mean race here folks), they will be asked to leave the group.

Now, with that out of the way, I went to send out the testing prototype and it turns out only one person send me a RW email address that takes attachments. If you want to have a say in how testing will be conducted, now's the time to join the party and PM me.

Thanks.

Great post gdeangel!!I'm excited to see how much support you already have.

Just a thought - is this the right forum for this post ? [At time of writing this post it is in the "Callouts" forum in the "Create/Join a Clan" sub forum.]

This sounds like a major initiative in the making and perhaps would be appropriate to Suggestions and Bug Reports or would get more attention in General Discussion ? I say this not for the egotistical reason of wanting it in 'my' forum but to ensure it gets the attention it deserves. [I almost never visit the Callouts forum and only found this now because it happened to have the most recent post in the forum and so showed up on the Forum index.]

It might even be worth asking one of the Admins to consider using the new Headlines to bring it to everyone's attention ... Not sure ...

I'm currently pretty over extended in terms of CC and other commitments so it would be unfair of me to ask to be part of the group. Having said that if you think I could help in some way don't hesitate to ask.

Hello gdeangel,

Perhaps its an idea to make an announcement (thread) in the General Discussion Forum what you are doing right now of forming a Social clan of map reviewers in the Join/Create a Clan sub-forum. So then you can lead every interesting member to your thread:

  • New group - map reviewers [forming][social][workgroup]

And for the information of you all I wanna say that all Usergroups, Social clans and Competitive clans at this moment will be in the sub-forum Join/Create a Clan. Maybe in a later stadium of clan development it will have its own sub-forum, but I'm not sure of that.

Feel free to PM me, if you still have questions.

I would like to sign up for this group. I might be more of a fly on the wall than an active contributor, but I will add things at times. Plus, this could turn out to be beneficial to tournaments in some capacity.

Alright. The mock-up of the review spreadsheet has gone out to two people that I have RW email addresses for. I am thinking that with 16 on the team now, we can maybe even increase from a 2-2-1 model per map to a 4-3-1 model or a 4-2-2 model. Here's the current roster. I will submit the request for official clan status in the next 24-hours, so anyone who plans to back out, I would appreciate you letting me know.

But for now I would appreciate people PM'ing me their email addresses - I don't have an FTP site but if someone wants to point me in that direction, it would be maybe an alternative if people don't want to let out their RW email addresses or something... Call me lazy, but I'm not planning to write up a web app to generate csv files - my plan is to implement this with MS Excel. That means group members will need to pass attachments back and forth to collaborate.

Thanks!

If you are willing to let a mapmaker do some testing, I'll help. Once I get another premium membership at least.

If not, I'd still like to be able to watch the discussions. I see my name is under "pending".
