People have things to do in life other than an online site, in fact, most people on this site do. Now... maybe you do not, but at least don't get angry at the fact that someone would rather spend time with their family during a holiday, rather than go around making sure that people have a forum about off topic things.

Seriously,

If it was something to the sort of: The site is down, it takes 25 seconds to make a single move in a game, the dice are stuck on the same 3 digit line of code, and every post goes haywire and it a reply to some random topic which you can't see and is a combination of a trillion merged threads.... etc. Then your argument would have some base to it.

But since the problem is a missing off topic forum, (which you can get on a myriad of other sites if you wanted to talk about politics or whatever), and one that has been temporarily moved to the general discussion, and those few clan forums that are missing, which you can easily just PM the members, or use some other form of communication....

Seriously?

Is it that big of a deal that people must cancel their vacations to go out and fix the problem which they did not themselves cause?

I never said I was angry dude. I said thanks for the free access to a site that isn't worth the 25 dollar premium that people pay for the shoddy administration. Your if/then statement there is appropriate, if the circumstances were such that:

a. it was work that involved a LOT of coordination between a large staff.
b. wouldn't take less than an hour to finish
c. couldn't be done remotely, in about an hour (though, really would only take about 15 minutes of actual work)

Amateurish .. hmm, well it depends how you look at it. It's more a sign that it's a small staff without massive amounts of money to throw at problems.

Does the announcement that the chaps are on holiday with their families and will not fix this until their return strike me as unprofessional? It's certainly honest, perhaps a little off-the-cuff but I do not have much of a problem with it.
Had they made the same announcement, in the same style when we could not play games and we could not access the site at all, then yes i would agree with the assessment.

The site is not down.. we can still chat nonsense.. and the mods are allowing the correct amount of gibberish in GD.

So they made a judgement call based on a family occasion compared to the level of problem with the businness. For them they certainly got it right and it does not affect us enough to outweigh that, I think that is probably fair.

As to $25: best value 12 quid i've ever spent (other than that one bacardi breezer and rohypnol in Ilford..) .. it is also the worst; quite frankly heroine is a less pernicious monkey.

you raise very fair points, with regards to their honesty and such. I have no problem with that. But my point is, were I a paying member of the site, I would feel robbed of service. People put value differently on different things, and to be, the sub professional decision to not repair the problem either before holiday or at some point during the holiday is a simple sign of a lack of professionalism. So, again, i say, Thanks for the freemium service!

I'm not angry or upset, only mildly inconvenienced by the lack of service that I do not pay for.

See, you guys are all bent out of shape for nothing.

To be fair, while I think demanding an instant fix is slightly unreasonable and while I appreciate that the forum is a bit of a freebie for us all; I don't understand why they haven't just made a temporary "this is OT until we can figure out how to get the old stuff back" forum to suffice until Wednesday. I mean, it'd take all of about two minutes to do, and it'd be an almost perfect fix.

But there we go, it's really not an issue worth losing any sleep over.

Yeap, that makes sense to me mate and i agree, they do seem to have just decided to let it slide. That really is not a big sin; i genuinely hope they had a nice holiday with their people!

just as an aside though; i am never sure about this 'the forum is a Freebie' line. It is an integral part of what it is to be a member here.. bloody hell, until you and i joined a couple of games the other day, for about the past 6 months you were a paid-up member only using the Forums.

the fact is that the forums are very much a draw to some people and to say that they are a free bonus or as others have said, you can go to another site completely misses the point. (this is not in disagreement with you Mustard, as reading between the lines, i am fairly sure you agree with me and were just taken away in a wonderful moment of bonhomie!)
The forums are the heartbeat of this place, we are a pain in the arse, and i am sure when Lack said "Twill-baby.. we are on holiday, they are going to moan anyway, they always bloody moan about everything! let's not fuck-up our holiday for these ingrates. We can deal with the fall-out after my little tootsie-roll!.. love you, no you hand up.. no you hang-up!..." it was said with a certain level of honest exasperation, as it is all true.. we are an ungrateful bunch of perpetual whiners.

We are however a bloody good yardstick for site opinion.. if nothing else, the forums are the most accurate and cost effective way for CC to gain market research and perception of customer care.

So, this really is not a big problem and i say 'let them eat cake!' (or the Canadian equivalent.. Moose-flapjacks) Let them come back renewed and reinvigorated by their R and R.. and then let them.. i have no idea at all where i am going with this...

anyway.. all that is left to say is 'suck it up cup moose flapjack!'

Look, this isn't a "Oops, I pushed the wrong button!" forum crash, this is a "Ooops! Something big happened with the hardware and now the entire forum has been corrupted, and I don't know why." kind of forum crash. Know what they're going to have to do? Go in, actually figure out what went wrong (which will be a group effort between both the CC people and the people down at the hardware place), spend hours figuring out what went wrong so it doesn't happen again, and after they do that, go into an old (and uncorrupted) backup of the forum, dig out what actually went missing, and then manually stick it back into the current corrupted database. If you think it'll only take an hour to fix, how about you go and stick a magnet on your harddrive and try to recover all the lost data.

Oh, and I thought that all they were going to have to do was revert to back up's and pull out the data table records that pertained to the missing forums. If the problem were the same as magnetically erasing my HD partitions, then I would think that they would indeed fix the problem before the holiday, as it would not do to leave the site completely off line. As it is, a few queries are all that they can do to remedy the problem. Sounds fair enough to me. I am only pointing out that this is not a "premium" quality level of service.

If I were to stick a magnet on my HD, It would take me about 4 hours to re-install, update and reload personal data.

By the way, what ever the "hickup" was, were I administering the site, I would be more curious to know what happened immediately rather than after a holiday. There is always the possibility that this was a deliberate action, and that should be identified immediately.

Did you not read the quote you put in the first post? Here it is again:
Twill wrote:We've heard conflicting things from the data center - we've been variously told it's the memory controller, then the hard drive something or other and then finally "sorry if the chiller failure caused you any problems"...which is what took out the database 3 months ago.

I'll post more when I know more.

Let me make it clear for you... They don't know what went wrong. Clear enough? Here, let me say it again... They don't know what went wrong. Since they don't have physical access to the data centre, they've gotta wait until the data centre gets back to them with their report about what went wrong. As it's a holiday, I can't blame lack for wanting to have a nice turkey dinner with his family rather than sit around waiting for an email from a data centre so he can give us info about what happened to our off topics forum. I also can't blame him for not wanting to dig around looking for an uncorrupted database backup so he can rummage through MySQL tables to give us our old forum back Anybody that choose to blame him for that is an asshole, plain and simple. It's not like we're not getting what's paid for. Why, I just finished a rather interesting speed game myself. That's a service I paid for. That's a service I'm receiving. I'm also playing in over 100 games right now. That's a service I paid for, that's a service I'm receiving. I've got a gold rank beside my name. Yup, I sure am getting what I paid for! Could they be giving us a temporary OT forum? Most certainly. Feel free to yell at them for that. But as is, these pictures of you are quite appropriate.

The old adage, "You get what you pay for" springs to mind here. Of course CC doesn't have a 24-hour team of highly qualified professionals. Maybe if everyone were paying $25 a month, we could expect that. The truth is that membership is a measly 25 bucks per year. On top of that, they're nice enough to let cheapskates like the OP play for free. It's ironic that someone would say "It's a good thing I can play this for free. There isn't enough support." Simple facts seem to escape some people. Like the fact that if more people bought premiums, and/or the membership was more expensive, the management would be able to hire more people to ensure better service. In summary, quit whining, and go do something useful for a couple days. When you get back your favourite forum will be back from it's 3-day vacation, and life will be back to normal.
