It's my day off today and I normally spend my time either playing XBOX 360, or in the pub. Yet CC is always in the background for me and I tend to check my games every couple of hours to see if I have any moves to make. Yet today my classic moves have come up and I have looked at the board and just thought no, I don't want to play my turns at all. The numbers are all in the wrong place, there are these strange lines all over the board and how can I possibly get excited about invading A(sodding)1? I am sure that when I play Classic somewhere deep in my subconscious is a little Mr C visualising burning oil fields when I attack The Middle East and hordes of screaming, spear waving Zulus when I engage in Africa. Millions of peasant conscripts are being marched to their deaths with artillery booming behind when I am fighting in Europe, while when I enter North America it is The War of Independence or The Civil War and, naturally, a complete bloodbath. Today I had the opportunity to assualt O1 or something and it suddenly, blindingly, dawned on me that I was just rolling dice and moving numbers around a screen. Without the historical context, the whole experience is for me diminished.
My poor friend manwiththeplan is not a very competitive CC player but loves but two maps - Classic and Middle Earth (he is a Tolkien nut). I don't doubt it is all elves, trolls and wizards with him when he is staring at the Middle Earth map and I am also quite sure that the experience for him is, today, equally diminished by that map he woke up to.
CC should really consider very carefully just how many players have paid money on this site to play classic risk on-line. It is simply not acceptable for this site to not have a classic map. I, like many others I am sure, paid money specifically to play the classic map and if there is no classic map it is highly unlikely I will pay again. To those who would like to accuse me of overreacting I would just remind you that CC no longer feels able to even have graphically represented dice or feels able to use words like 'card'. If we can't use the word 'advance' I fail to see (though I would happily admit I am no lawyer) how we can use anything that even resembles the classic map.
