Historical Context

Postby Mr Changsha on Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:27 am

It's my day off today and I normally spend my time either playing XBOX 360, or in the pub. Yet CC is always in the background for me and I tend to check my games every couple of hours to see if I have any moves to make. Yet today my classic moves have come up and I have looked at the board and just thought no, I don't want to play my turns at all. The numbers are all in the wrong place, there are these strange lines all over the board and how can I possibly get excited about invading A(sodding)1? I am sure that when I play Classic somewhere deep in my subconscious is a little Mr C visualising burning oil fields when I attack The Middle East and hordes of screaming, spear waving Zulus when I engage in Africa. Millions of peasant conscripts are being marched to their deaths with artillery booming behind when I am fighting in Europe, while when I enter North America it is The War of Independence or The Civil War and, naturally, a complete bloodbath. Today I had the opportunity to assualt O1 or something and it suddenly, blindingly, dawned on me that I was just rolling dice and moving numbers around a screen. Without the historical context, the whole experience is for me diminished.

My poor friend manwiththeplan is not a very competitive CC player but loves but two maps - Classic and Middle Earth (he is a Tolkien nut). I don't doubt it is all elves, trolls and wizards with him when he is staring at the Middle Earth map and I am also quite sure that the experience for him is, today, equally diminished by that map he woke up to.

CC should really consider very carefully just how many players have paid money on this site to play classic risk on-line. It is simply not acceptable for this site to not have a classic map. I, like many others I am sure, paid money specifically to play the classic map and if there is no classic map it is highly unlikely I will pay again. To those who would like to accuse me of overreacting I would just remind you that CC no longer feels able to even have graphically represented dice or feels able to use words like 'card'. If we can't use the word 'advance' I fail to see (though I would happily admit I am no lawyer) how we can use anything that even resembles the classic map.

What I don't understand is how the Grand Strategy site can not only have the exact Risk map but they also use the exact expanded map found on Risk II. If they have a contract with Hasbro why wouldn't it be possible for Conquer Club to do the same?

Because Lack probably doesn't want to give Hasbro a share of his profits would be my guess.

What I don't understand is why people are STILL complaining about this in the face of Twill saying these maps will be remade in foundry contests.

Do people really just want to complain without thinking about what they are complaining about? Or without reading to see if there are any responses from those in charge? Not to mention the fact that each person making a thread somehow thinks they are the FIRST to make the thread? Seriously now.

i want classic back, i probably won't pay again either if it doesn't come back. CC was about playing competetive risk style games, not playing a "strategy" game on some entertainment site, there are too many of THOSE sites and not enough CC sites. CC was almost perfect, now it has taken a deep deep push down.

Here ya go:

Twill wrote:Hey everybody.

There's been a lot of activity on the changes we made yesterday. A lot of upset people (myself included) and a lot of questions. Let me do my best to address those concerns from what I know:

1) The maps are fugly. Yes, we know they are. I personally agree with you all on that point, but we had to change them to avoid potential copyright issues. Andydufresne, and Oaktown along with at least one or two users have already begun work on a revamp contest to find someone to come up with something better. We're hoping it goes up soon so we can get back to something more playable.

2) <so and so> must DIE! - no, they must not. Please do not attempt to arrange any sort of lynch mobs, class action law suits, consumer boycots or intestinal stranglings. These will accomplish nothing other than to piss off more people which wont solve anything for anyone, and trying to strangle someone may just make things worse - we don't want murder on our hands ;) Please let us handle any issues that are related to this.

3) Communication SUCKS, I'm leaving, you blow, how dare you, I want a refund - these are all fair criticisms and we are truly sorry that this panned out the way it did but again, it was something we did to avoid potential issues. All I ask is that if you have a specific complaint or suggestion please try to contact me. My inbox it flooding right now, but I will try to get to all of your concerns and address them as best as I can as soon as I can.

4) To those of you who have sent us best wishes, thank you. I wish I could thank you all personally because they mean a lot to us. I can only hope that these changes aren't too onerous and that we can continue to offer you a great game and an enjoyable site.

I know that this doesn't fix everything, but we are going to be taking steps to make things less ugly and messy. This thread is moving fairly quickly so please quote this message once every couple of pages so that future readers can keep up to date. I'm trying to read all the posts and am PMing several people to address their concerns at a pace it can be followed, but there are a lot to get through :)

Hang in there folks, pretty maps are hopefully coming :)
