The large map is somewhat better... but still obscured by the cloud. What about using the same style as the shelves?

Now I seriously have to ask, what exactly is the problem? Is the text not readable? Is it not clear enough?

It has a drop shadow. The drop shadow is, naturally, darker if it's against a dark background. Removing the drop shadow and relying only on the stroke looked weird and inconsistent because the other legend texts have drop shadows.

Black text is not an option, like I said. All other legend text is white, and black text would not be as readable against that background.

I tried making the stroke more prominent, to make it more uniform, but this again made it look weird when it was so different from the other legend texts, so I toned it down somewhat.

Really, in my opinion, this is pretty much as good as it can be made. I've tried other options, and it just seems that every other way has some other disadvantage to it. Maybe we just have to accept that there's no perfect solution here?

For comparison, here's the large map with the drop shadow removed and the stroke made bolder. I think this is a considerably poorer solution, as it makes no sense for one text to have a shadow and another not to, but if this is what's needed for the map to go forward...

Have you tried using the font that we have for the ice shelves? Just a thought.

Edit: Sorry natty, but I forgot to mention about the possibility of blending the bases of the mountains/glaciers into the map a little. They look like they are pasted on there.

It's the same font, only non-italic.

Great looking map.... the penguin sticks out like a sore frostbitten thumb. Yes penguins live there, and I've sure warring parties would respect their habitat, but a photographic penguin on what is a pastel colored, icy, drawn map... is a thematic eye sore. It's gotta go. If you can make an image of a penguin work within your theme, great, if not, either nothing there (same as the legend) or maybe have it marked as "Penguin Preserve."

Alright, good enough on the penguin, I dunno if it's necessarily needed, but at least it fits better now.
