Honestly Dave, I wrote that at the beginning of the thread, and felt it was far too early to inject what seemed like political trolling into the thread. I meant it at the time, but for the record, didnt specifically state you were, but only that those politically trolling were. I was attempting to ward of a political discussion, where its possible one should not exist.

As the thread progressed, I myself made some political statements, or at least one, and honestly do not know if it was appropriate or inappropriate, but since I did, I certainly could be said to be somewhat hypocritical here, and can only say that my view on posting such things changed over the progression of the thread. I partially addressed this already.

I still contend that its very possible I was a POS for doing so though, and certainly some may view it as such, but I was most definitely not trying to troll, and was definitely trying to make a point. Again, I meant what I said, especially at the time, but I fully accept that I may have done the exact same thing.

As far as player, goes, I personally didn't see anything posted that seemed political, and certainly nothing close to what might be political trolling.

Yes you did. You posted your flame right after my post, in response, and prejudging me as a "political troll".

It sure takes a real piece of shit to do something like that.

(did that last sentence seem like it was directed at you even though it didn't explicitly say that you, AAFitz, are a piece of shit? I WONDER WHY)

What was offensive and off topic about my post?

What was offensive and off topic about mine?

OK, looks like I over reacted. I thought you made yet another diatribe against the tea party. Anyway, this just is not the thread for that.

i apologize and will edit my original post.

That's from the article. It also says that local media is reporting that the death toll is possibly as high as 1,300. I really hope it isn't.

But the fact remains, Japan has done a great job mitigating the danger to their populace, including a huge (and expensive) early warning system for quakes and tsunamis. The death toll would be much higher if they had a shitty government that hadn't been so well prepared.

Considering all of the ways a group like the Tea Party is trying to dismantle our infrastructure, it's only natural one would think about what would happen if something similar hit us.

here is the post...and I fully agree.

I just heard the worst interview from a US nuclear facility owner. He said it is 100 times worse than they ever thought possible.

He thinks its already at the chernobyl level of disaster, if not worse.

He thinks it will only get worse.

_My personal opinion is that it all comes down to a lack of a god damned water supply. One emergency earthquake/tsunami-proof water tower, would possibly have allowed them to gravity feed the reactors and keep them cool. Perhaps something could still have gone wrong, but this is seriously just a matter of not having electricity to power pumps to keep the fuel cool enough to not melt down.

You have hundreds of thousands of lives, billions of dollars worth of reactors at risk and with the right reserve of water, which is relatively as inexpensive as it gets, could theoretically have staved of the disaster. Again, its possible that size earthquake was going to do some damage anyways, but if they had enough water right now, they could save the reactors, or at least most of them.

This is so tragic to watch happen. I was hoping so bad that they'd save those reactors and while the disaster was a massive tragedy, at least there would be a success story in there anyways. It also stands to follow if those reactors can be so vulnerable, there is no question other ones are at risk.

I'm loving this banner on CNN. It says "7.5 tons of water dropped on reactor No. 3".

Water weighs 8.35 lbs. per gallon.

That's about 1800 gallons of water or 1(one) helicopter bucket drop.

Oh well. I guess "7.5 TONS!" sounds better than "1 bucket".

and the effort failed... as did attempts to use water jets. Not disputing the effort, but it does seem such a high tech country could do better. I mean, what about some of those fancy robots just pulling in fire hoses?

I am not sure who to trust on this right now, because we keep hearing so many different stories. However, both the Today show and NPR agreed that a "Chernobyl" type incident is not going to happen. That is, there won't be a huge explosion to spew material over a wide swath. This might bear some resemblance to 3 mile Island, but even that is apparently only a loose connection. (if anyone knows better, please speak up!).

.. and pox on that Sintu priest who claimed this was "God's revenge"!

I heard it pretty much went everywhere too in the wind. I was wondering if they could use ice or slush instead, so it fell where it was going, and added even more cooling in the process. Probably too dangerous to start dropping solids on spent fuel rods, but Im sure the possibility is there to make it possible.

NY Times blog had a little post about Google Street view in one of the deserted cities in the exclusion zone. It is interesting to wander around the streets. You can find a couple of buildings that have been demolished or crumbled down. I don't think this city was as devastated, since it appears pretty intact, but worth a random wander through I think.
