Re: Skyrim: Elder Scrolls V

I have a few questions. I have the game on X-Box 360 rather than PC (I know, I'm a Phillistine). I'm trying to play as a mage/thief/assassin type character. I'm relying on destruction magic, sneaking, and the like. I do plan on reading some free online guides at some point, but I thought this might a good place to go as well. Anyway, my questions:

(1) For the main quest, are there time limits on when I have to do stuff? So, for example, I have to warn the Jarl of whatever about the dragon - do I have to do that in a certain number of days or can I do other shit and then go back and do that quest?

(2) What kind of armor can I wear while using magic? Right now I have light imperial armor, but I can afford upgraded stuff. Can I wear that and still have my offhand with the spells? My spells work with the imperial armor right now.

(3) I have a raise zombie spell, but it doesn't seem to work ever. Any ideas?

Thanks.

You can say that again!

(BTW, sorry I can't help. Don't play Skyrim yet. My guesses are 1) No time limits, 2) heavier armor may increase your magika recharge time, and 3) you may not have enough magika)

1. No time limits
2. I know in Oblivion your spells would be slightly weaker when using armor you weren't experienced in, but I think that's no longer the case in Skyrim. It's still better to wear robes as a mage though, because a) you look cooler and b) they actually help you (since they often have magic-boosting enchantments)
3. Why doesn't it work? The spell might just be too weak for most things you're killing.

I think the zombie spell raises a zombie that can help you in combat for 60 seconds. It's not my default equipped spell (sparks is), but when I switch to it and try to use it, literally nothing happens. I'll figure it out.

Thanks for answering the other questions.

As Inklosed mentioned, you are pretty much free to work at whatever pace you want. I remember reading a review a while back ago where the reviewer basically did all the side quests before working on the main story line.

(2) What kind of armor can I wear while using magic? Right now I have light imperial armor, but I can afford upgraded stuff. Can I wear that and still have my offhand with the spells? My spells work with the imperial armor right now.

Inklosed is right on the money again in regards to Mage Robes. What skills are you working on and perking up the most? Destruction, Sneak? Enchanting can give your you some nice magicka bonuses if you haven't started on that yet.

As I mentioned, I've got a Ranger character going, and I've managed to acquire some Stamina Enchanted gear which is tremendously helpful for my Eagle Eye / slowing down time perk.

I'm working mostly on Destruction and One-Handed Weapon... basically the stuff I use the most. I think I stupidly did a light armor perk as well (I'm level 5 currently).

It appears, based on my limited experience, that it is better to pick something (i.e. mage) and work on that rather than to "multi-class."

multi-classing doesn't really work. i went through the game using almost exclusively conjuration and archery, then after i finished the main quest, i started training one- and two-handed skills in dungeons and quests. it was almost impossible because the game scales enemy difficulty based on your character's level, not your proficiency in the weapon you happen to be using.

Which is why I found it reasonable (in Oblivion) to stop leveling/sleeping after gaining level 5. My skills would increase, as would the damage, but the enemies' health remained the same. It was one of the only RPG where leveling up didn't make much sense.

You are not doing a stupid thing perking in Light Armor. You will gain better protection.

As for time limits, you have none...you can literally run around and do other shit (like swim all the way to Winterhold or spend three hours catching butterflies).

As Andy had mentioned in the post before this, it is quite fun just to do the side quests. I always sit down and want to do the main quest, but I get side tracked by other quests...which is perfectly fine...they are all fun!

As for weapons, have have been focusing on Two Handed, because when you need it, you can get up close and get rid of someone quick! I have never been particular about using a one handed weapon and a shield; but using two weapons is kind of fun. Usually I run around with Summon Fire Atronarch and Firebolt. Fire Atronarch is a great spell, but Raise Zombie can be good as well (as the zombie will retain all the powers of the deceased).

I started the game focusing everything into magic, but now I am at a point in the game were I need to start focusing on health and stamina. My character can be killed with one hit from a giant or one spell from a powerful necromancer.

One part of the game that kind of peeves me is that you are the ONLY customer that the merchants have...so money can run low for particular merchants.

And for your wasted SKyrim time viewing pleasure:

So, I've been avoiding the "Go Talk to the Greybeards" part of the quest-line, but finally went to complete it yesterday. About 1/3 of the way up the mountain, I decided I was tired of following the path, so I tried hiking (aka running and jumping) up the side of the mountain to see if I could do so and get to both the Throat of the World and the Greybeard hangout. After about 30 minutes of plodding my way up the mountain this way, I got to the top. Ha.

You can always use googles nifty 'image search'...where you drag and drop and image into the search field and it will search for 'visually similar' images. I've used that when I was trying to find a whole picture of something of which I only had a small portion.

And nice use of the search function, I wasn't even thinking of that when one when I posted, just of the two previous posts. What search terms did you use? And yeah, it's still the same avatar.

I did the same thing on that mountain! LOL! You have to do a lot of jumping and moving back and forth; but then you can't make it to the very top...the game will tell you you can't. However, by jumping up and over the mountain, I found the Dwarven Ruins...but I need a key to get in the dungeon.

PS: Anyone that makes it to the top of the Throat by following the path the Grey Manes show you (you won't be able to make it until you learn the Thu'um Clear Skies) will meet the leader of the Grey Manes. SPOILER ALERT! READ NO FURTHER UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED!

The leader of the Grey Manes is Paarthurnax; however, they fail to mention to you that Paarthurnax is not a "person" but he ends up being a dragon! So, when you first meet him, you will want to kill him. But, once you pick a battle with him, he will not die and eventually you will have to run away or die...but Paarthurnax will never talk to you after this. So, this will force you to have to go back a few saves before you attacked Paarthurnax. The best thing for you to do when you first meet up with the dragon leader Paarthurnax is just to walk directly up to him and talk to him like you would with any other person in Skyrim...then he will teach you the Fire Thu'um!

That's interesting. I have yet found any use for the Ethereal Thu'um. Force, Fire, and Frost...that has been my most used Thu'ums. And the one Thu'um that I thought I would never use was Kyne's Peace Thu'um; however, sometimes I just don't want to fck around with cave bears, ice wolves, and other annoying animal crap as I journey across Skyrim. Just as easy to use Kyne's Peace on them and keep going to your destination.
