The Competitive Argument thread

Postby Gillipig on Sat Oct 20, 2012 12:19 pm

There have been so many arguments over the years in this forum. But rarely have winners been declared. The goal is to make this thread a place where we settle arguments!
A topic is selected, then over the course of a week everyone get's to make their case, counter others statements and do what they otherwise would do to try to win the argument. At the end of the week, we put up a poll where all the debators opinion is votable. The poll is open for a week and at the end of that week the opinion which has gathered the most votes will have won the argument.
After that, another topic is chosen and process starts over again.
Wat u tink?

I can think of many reasons that you might have, but none that doesn't even make it worth trying. You can't know for sure that anything will work. If it works it works and it's a fun thing, if it doesn't work, then it isn't the end of the world.

it won't work because people will not change their minds and will just vote for whatever they already believed

Indeed. For most folks who haven't been part of some sort of a debate team, it will just come down to whichever agrees with their own views.

But you're talking about the debators themselves. Not the onlookers. The debators will probably just vote their own suggestion, just like two politicians argumenting won't change their opinion. But the onlookers might!
Everyone gets one vote. The people who take part of the debate will most likely vote their own suggestion, although I'm not so sure all will. I know I would be prepared to vote anothers idea if I think it was better compiled than mine. And I'm pretty stubborn lol, so if I can do that I'm sure most could do it in some situation. Most importantly though, there are people who don't post but still read what is being said. The subject at hand might be something they don't feel knowledgable enough to talk about or they're just shy. Either way their votes will be most important. And they're open to be persuaded!

but what if you don't agree with either side, or think both sides have equal merit?

I think our first topic should be whether or not this idea will actually work. I'm planning to vote no. Convince me otherwise.

These forums alone have changed my mind on a few important issues. In no short order - gun control, government intervention during 9-11, the voting process, music, military intervention.

I'm still convinced we don't need the South. I think these forums agree.

Barcelona for me, largely because Lionel Messi is such a model professional,I love his attitude when he is kicked,as he regularly is,he just gets on with it and makes cunts out of his opponents. Also I have an instinctive and probably irrational dislike for some clubs including Real Madrid,Man Utd,and Glasgow Rangers.

Thanks.... I'm going to vote Barcelona.
I have no clue and don't care; so I won't be reading the arguments for/against either "team" in this "sport".

I'm voting Barcelona solely because I infer that you like Real Madrid.
Hey... Majority Wins all arguments right?!
