2012 Chanukah, Solstic, Kwanzaa, Jul, Christmas

Postby 2dimes on Sat Dec 08, 2012 2:31 pm

In December there's also Festivus, Pan American Aviation Day, Monkey Day...

I really enjoyed Symmetry's Athiest Christmas thread last year. I had issues with Christmas depression for a while, partially because of the implosion of a relationship on December 24 one year.

Having children during Christmas is excellent because their excitemet brought back the fun.

I''ve been actively trying to bring back the concept that "Christmas time" is a time of peace, happiness and joy for all like they were going for in the 1970s.

I went through a real "Bah, Humbug" phase before I became a Dad. Now my kids are too old to be excited by the whole thing (especially as all the rest of the family can't get here), but I enjoyed it so much when they were little that I haven't lost that magic again.

Happy Saturnalia everyone.

I'm glad you enjoyed it- was just thinking about a sequel thread. Agreed that Christmas is all about the kids though.

This particular holiday is my favorite (Christmas for me). I think it goes 40% religious reasons and 60% cultural/pagan/pomp reasons. I love the whole process of getting the tree, decorating, shopping, etc. I think the music really does it for me though. When I got married, the traditions changed quite a bit, but with kids it's just really awesome, even with younger children. My two year old son exclaims on a regular basis "Ho ho ho" which is about as awesome as it gets.

I'm not a fertility tree fan and I don't need presents. I enjoy giving presents and if I find something someone really wants it's even better.

Once the kids can talk and their eyes get big when something happens or they see something they like it's really fun.

Our kids have always been different about it too. Our daughter likes to open everything until she runs out of wrapped presents. Our son wants to play with everything as soon as he opens it while my wife pushes the next one to be opened on him.

We used to let them open one at a time.
And not before breakfast.
One year they begged to be allowed to open just one before breakfast - and the boy (5 years old or so at the time) played for an hour with the pokemon pencil and paper he'd otherwise have just dropped and forgotten in his quest for the next pressie.
Good times.

I'd be up for a week long or 12 days kind of thing where they opened one per day until the 25th then opened the rest if there's that many. Just start back at 5 if that's how many presents they're getting. 12 might be too far back. It would be interesting to see if they could keep up the excitement or if it would slow down towards the end.

Hmmm, I think Chanukah is 8 night now that I stopped to sort of think for a second. Oh well, that's enough thinking for this year.
