Chinese Knife Rampage

2012:

22 Kids Slashed in China Elementary School

BEIJING – A Chinese man went on a rampage at an elementary school in China slashing 22 children and one adult with a knife.

The injuries were gruesome, and reportedly include cut-off fingers and ears. No one however was mortally wounded.

Private ownership of firearms is banned in China and are permitted only for hunting and only with permission. Knives have become the weapon of choice to commit violence with in China.

Min Yingjun, 36, was arrested for the knife attack at Chenpeng Village’s Wanquan Elementary School on Friday morning. Local officials said he may be suffering from a psychological illness.

On Thursday, a Chinese man was arrested after cutting the faces of several female passengers on a Beijing subway, China Daily reported.

The man, whose surname is Hu, allegedly wanted ā€œrevenge on societyā€ after being scorned by a former girlfriend.

Considering that knife attacks on crowds of people are an established problem in China, should the Chinese government consider banning knives?

Also,

Why don't we see these kinds of attacks in other countries where knives are legal?

An established problem? I lived in China for seven years and never felt threatened once and would have much preferred to be threatened by a knife than a gun. As a father, I would much rather collect my son from a hospital than a morgue. A further point is that when the police approach you, they come at you with clubs as a last resort. In America, they use guns as a first resort. I was told, last time I was in the states, that America is the only free country in the world. This information was quite new to me, since I hadn't been around and had just come through the TSA search at the airport.

Knife attacks have been going on for sometime in a country with 1.4 billion people? You don't say.

Knives are not legal to carry around.

Because, with 1.4 billion people there would be more than in countries with fewer people?

If you would like some interesting videos on how taiwanese gangs attack people using US supplied weapons, then please do a friendly youtube search. Your whole thread is biased, without credibility and an attempt to compare 21 dead school children to 22 injured ones.

To clarify my point, or the purpose of this thread, was to host a discussion based on these two questions. I suspect that many will have an emotional response and logically inconsistent views with their positions on related issues.

Are you asking why you personally don't see the reports? Or are you saying that they only happen in China? Japan has had a few knife rampages, as has the UK and the US. Just going by the countries I've lived in on this.

i defer to Sabotage for a China oriented opinion, although it seems like you want to ignore his take.

Perhaps you might consider getting to your point.

Apologies for my lack of clarity, the belief I was referring to was that America,by which I presume the US is meant,is the only free country in the world,or even an especially free one.Not only is this delusional but it is fatuous.

I'm not sure how this thread is biased and without credibility. Please note that I don't really care your explanation either...

This has nothing to do with Taiwanese gangs attacking people using US supplied weapons. That may or may not be an unrelated issue depending on if it's true, but I fail to see what that has to do with anything here.

Yes, you are right. It is your OP and we should focus on the issues.

Should knives, which are illegal to carry around, be banned in China?

Why hasn't the author of this OP heard of knife attacks in other places than China?

It has a lot of bearing on it. Exact same kind of crime, bizarrely so. People can kill with knives, but it's clearly a lot harder.

The gun attack was incredibly more lethal, and easier to carry out by the perpetrator.

Should they or shouldn't they in your view? Usually the way questions work is that someone asks a question and someone else answers it. I don't see how asking each other the same question back and forth is productive, and that's not the intention of this thread.

In my views China should not attempt to ban knives because it would be impractical and an encroachment on personal freedom. Do we agree on this?
