"The Hobbit" Theater Shooting

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says the off-duty sergeant, who was working security, heard the gunshots and came running. She saw the gunman coming out of the men’s restroom. The Sheriff’s Office says the gunman did not shoot at her, but his gun was drawn so she opened fire.

That off-duty sergeant, identified as Lisa Castellano, fired four times, wounding the gunman. Only one other person was wounded, a 49-year-old man inside the theater, who was hit by one of the gunman’s shots. Both are expected to recover.

Investigators say about 30 rounds were fired. It’s unclear why the break-up with his girlfriend caused the man to go after his co-workers. Investigators haven’t ruled out a love-triangle involving someone else at the restaurant.

With one shot, an off-duty sergeant took down a gunman who attempted to opened fire at a crowded movie theater lobby during a late night showing of “The Hobbit” in San Antonio, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Police say a gunman, identified as Jesus Manuel Garcia, chased patrons from the nearby China Garden Restaurant into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater at around 9 p.m. on Sunday. Garcia, an employee of the restaurant, reportedly walked in the establishment looking for a woman.

When the woman, also reportedly a restaurant employee, wasn’t there, Garcia pulled out a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

“It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater,” Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.

The commotion sent horrified restaurant patrons into the movie theater lobby, but the gunman followed. He again attempted to open fire, and this time his gun didn’t jam. Garcia reportedly shot one man in the chest before Antu says an off-duty sheriff’s sergeant working security the theater shot him once, dropping him to the floor.

Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Castellano reportedly chased the gunman toward the back of the theater. The 13-year department veteran cornered him after he ran into a men’s restroom and shot him before taking his gun.

“The officer involved, she took the appropriate action to try to keep everyone safe in the movie theater,” Antu added.

Due to the off-duty sergeant’s bravery, the gunman was not able to make it into the theater where he could have potentially taken many lives.

The gunman and the man he shot were hospitalized, according to WOAI.

Police say a recent breakup set off the man’s shooting spree on Sunday, MySanAntonio.com reports.

Jesus Manuel Garcia, 19, an employee at a China Garden restaurant next to the Santikos Mayan Palace 14 theater, apparently became upset Sunday night after his girlfriend broke up with him.

He lashed out by sending her a message saying he planned to go to the restaurant and “shoot somebody,” said Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Raymond Pollard.

Pollard said the woman called to warn restaurant employees, but by the time she saw his message, Garcia was already outside the China Garden firing a Glock 23 at the front door about 9:25 p.m.

If Garcia survives his attempt at mass murder, officials say he will likely face a charge of attempted capital murder as he allegedly shot at the San Antonia police car on Southwest Military Drive as he ran from the restaurant and into the theater.

main point: There was a gun on location. I will grant the off duty officer can probably aim better

Well, it might answer people who insist that security guards are useless to stop gun violence.

I'm glad this ended well. It makes sense to me that a palace of a movie theater would have a well-trained security guard on duty. I find it odd and hard to understand why Jesus chased people from the China restaurant to the theater. It seems like the theater patrons and personnel should have been warned and ready for Jesus because of that. He must have really been off his rocker.

What a palace of a movie theater. Our local theater is a brick wall with two doors in it. It used to be a speak-easy. That building is ugly, but man am I jealous of people who have a local theater with more than 5 "top release" movie options.

Gunman goes to a place that is not a gun free zone and is stopped early because a responsible and highly trained person was there (not a every day normal Joe civilian, a police officer off duty working for some extra bucks)

Surely he would pick the easier target like a school right? I mean wouldn't any psycho gunman worth the name choose to go to a place where there will not be weapons rather than one where he could meet armed resistance?

And every screening of every film is staffed by someone with very advanced, regularly refreshed gun training too right? It's not just blind luck that there happened to be someone there, they all have it so whenever we go to the movies we can all feel safe! Hurrah!

I see you this - and raise you this:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... s/1776869/

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) — A man with a history of theft and weapons convictions gunned down two police officers investigating possible drug activity in a Kansas grocery parking lot, and was later killed after an armed standoff, authorities said Monday.

Two highly trained and on duty, alert and suspicious police officers taken down by someone who was only later killed himself at another location in a shoot out. Tell me again how guns make for a safer society?

Scary thing is he probably wasn't insane until he went through a highly stressful relationship break-up. Shows how easily someone can snap and how quickly it turns to deadly violence if you allow everyone to own lethal weapons.

Maybe if he'd only had a knife he wouldn't have been able to kill anyone before he got taken down, and he might have been able to have been rehabilitated back into being a useful and constructive member of society. (Note this is not admonishing him from any responsibility, he deserves his punishment as he is clearly guilty of murder, but if he hadnt been able to get a gun he wouldn't necessarily have killed anyone and he might have been able to turn his life around later on down the road)

Update: WOAI now reports it was an off-duty sergeant who fired a total of four shots, wounding the shooter. An Initial report by 1200 WOAI news said that an off-duty sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect one time.

Today, Press TV reported that two people were wounded when a gunman entered a San Antonio theater. The shooting occurred last night at about 9:25 p.m. at the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater during a showing of “The Hobbit.” According to reports, the gunman's original target was a China Garden Restaurant where he was employed.

Officials say the man was looking for a female co-worker, and when he learned she wasn't there, he produced a gun. The weapon jammed when he tried to fire it in the restaurant, and some of the patrons fled across the parking lot and into the nearby theater.

The gunman opened fire in parking lot, injuring one man who was shot in the chest.

He was prevented from entering the theater by an off duty sheriff's deputy working theater security. The deputy shot him once, abruptly ending his shooting spree. “She did what she felt she had to do,” Antu said. “I feel that she saved a lot of lives by taking the action she had to take.”

Both the victim and the gunman are currently hospitalized. No officers or other civilians were hurt.

I heard he was only after his girlfriend that broke up with him for a coworker at the Chinese restaurant across the street. Pretty asshole thing to do, but witnesses mentioned that he wasn't targeting anyone else at the movie theater (if so, there would have been more people hurt before the cop got involved).

And again, if he wasn't allowed to have a gun to begin with...he would have never gone as far as he did.

The analogy doesnt quite add up.

A gun, when present over any other alternative (baseball bat, knife, fist, middle finger etc), increases the likelihood that the outcome of any confrontation will be fatal over that of the aforementioned alternatives - regardless of who has the gun (goodie, baddie or both). This is because guns are pretty damn good at killing people.

However the tool in which you eat with or the interface in which you communicate has no bearing on how much you eat nor how good you are at spelling, when compared to the alternatives; your hand is just as good as shovelling down icecream (though to be fair you hand will get cold), and likewise you can still spell nice and poorly when you write it out by hand.
I go to the gym to justify my mockery of fat people.

It's the person, not the object. To blame the object downplays the blame that should be squarely on the murderer.

That's how we tell when people are exploiting something for their own political gain
