I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04.

I've gotta say I'm liking it better than Mint. Specially the fact that it's better incorporated. Evevrything functions well from the box. Except perhaps java 1.7. But Everything else is just fine.

I'm still getting used to Unity though.

I bet in a 1900x1200 looks awesome. And with a desktop system with good graphics card runs great.

Lots of people hate unity but it works for me. I find it convenient, switching windows and launching programs is so easy as you can do it all from the sidebar. There are some features about unity I don't like though. These are the global menu (the thing where each window's menu is melded into the top menu bar even when the windows aren't maximized), and the new thin scroll bar thingy. Luckily all of these can be disabled easily, as I've done.

That's the great thing about linux - if you don't like something, you can just opt out, unlike mapple/microcrap systems which force bad design decisions on you constantly, and even in the best case scenario you can get some kind of hack to change it, which may or may not be malware in disguise...

Anyway I also tried mate recently (the new gnome2 fork) but I still like unity better. It just seems too much like windows xp - I like how unity gives you almost all of the screen to use, if you set the sidebar to pop-up mode the only thing that takes room on the screen is the top menu bar, the rest is all left for applications. What I mean is, the interface is there when you need it, and hides away non-intrusively when you don't. That's good ui design in my opinion.

what do you use the top panel for then? if not for the menu.. I don't like it either but other than the icons on the right, there's no use for it.

Not much really... well, showing the title of a maximized window, and closing/minimizing a maximized window... I guess it might be a force of habit, but I like my menus where they should be - below the window title.

Btw I also really love the feature where you can drag windows to the top, right or left edges of the screen, so that the top edge maximizes, left and right half-maximizes and attaches the window to the side. It's also great that it works backwards too, so if you have a maximized window and just want to peek at a window below it you can just quickly grab the window with the mouse and sort of peek under it, no need to click the window buttons at all for that.

For some reason after I switched to Ubuntu I was having a problem after one update...for some reason it would only run in low-graphics mode and would take forever to boot.

I completely re-installed Windows though so I'm using that now and it works fine but hopefully I'll be able to figure out what was wrong with Ubuntu just because if I want to actually code more it'll be a hell of a lot easier than Windows.

Probably some problem with your graphics drivers. You should try reinstalling ubuntu (and make sure you create a separate partition for your /home directory, it saves a hell of a lot of trouble - if you mess up your system you can just reinstall without losing all your home folder files or user accounts) and then create at least 2 accounts with sudo rights - that way if you get problems, you can always switch to the backup account to see if the problem is system-wide or only on your main user.

Also, there's a web browser that works in the terminal, I don't remember its name right now, but it can be very useful if your DE breaks and you need to look for help in internet forums...

Lynx. Linux lovers wouldn't shut up about it 10 years ago.

Yep, that's the one. It's kind of cool. I'm reading this forum with it right now, works fine. Really fast too.

I feel like an infidel.

I had been using Chromium for a while, so I decided to give Firefox another chance. It was 15 days, it was cool and all, I installed a very minimalistic and gray theme that looked gorgeous, added extensions and all, to be honest it was all well. But deep down I knew Chromium is faster.

So I'm back to Chromium and though I like the old fashioned way Firefox looks, I'm staying on Chrome. It's much more faster and responsive.
