I just got my learners permit and am thinking about buying a cruiser.

does anyone here ride?
what would you recommend i learn on?
what helmet do you recommend?

Don't start with anything crazy. Start with something low in CCs.

Learn the limits of your skill in handling the bike, then move up in size when you get comfortable and experienced.

Also, don't do anything stupid unless you're close to hospital.

we have restrictions here. must be 650cc or smaller. i'm thinking something like the honda vt400

If you're just starting out, pretty much like BBS said, although don't be afraid to start off with moderate CCs. You have to learn to respect the power and be comfortable with any situation. I started street riding on a 1000, maybe that's a steep learning curve but I know full well what I should and should not be doing.

I'd say start off with something that's a little beat up and lightweight; chances are, if you're just starting out, you'll drop it a few times and picking them up is a pain (never dropped a street bike yet on my own but a few close calls). Actually that vt400 would probably be pretty sweet to learn on. Probably the highest accident rates are middle aged guys who've never ridden and start riding on a huge touring bike that turns like a boat. Don't do that.

Full face helmet for sure.

K, every rider ever will probably tell you this, but it's important: you're most likely going to lay it down at some point. I've only known one person who hasn't had an accident of some kind in normal street riding, and he's sort of the exception that proves the rule. Car drivers will not see you, so get used to it and prepare accordingly.

TG is absolutely right on this. Also, don't ride in short pants and flip-flops. Road rash hurts!!!

Been riding dirt and street for 35+ years....just assume EVERY vehicle cant see you AND is out to kill you. Dont be a dick. DONT sightsee - in a car you can occasionally look at the sights - NEVER take your eyes off the road while riding....NEVER. My best advice....oh....and keep the shiny side UP brother ;o)

ps - in my avvy is the dirtbike I ride...an old yamaha TT600....on the left. I didnt know you had cc restrictions....I would recommend the biggest motor (600?) as the bike is more stable and you have the power to get out of bad situations if needed.....

the restrictions will apply for the first 3 years so i'm looking for something to last. i'm thinking a 250 cc might be good to start on but after a few months i'll just be wanting more grunt.

you're braver than I....I've logged close to 100,000 street miles and I sure as hell wouldn't take a 250 on the road with cars :lol:
