Faramir never tried to steal the ring. Methinks you need to go back and re-read a few chapters...

Furthermore, he didn't really do "jack shit" while recovering from his wounds. His affair with Eowyn while in the Houses of Healing snapped her out of her depression and (although it isn't explicitly stated) quite likely prevented her from committing suicide.
