What are you giving up for Lent?

Postby Dukasaur on Thu Feb 14, 2013 6:29 pm

So, I was driving through Gary, Indiana, today, and some fundamentalist preacher was on the radio trying to save my soul. (Well, when I first came across that station he was talking about how difficult it is for an honest man to get elected to the Senate, which got me hooked, and I didn't even realize it was a religious station until after he got me hooked.) Anyway, suddenly he starts talking about Lent. I was totally blown away. I didn't think Protestants did Lent. Learn something new every day.

Anyway, back to the original question. Well?

I'm not religious, but I usually do give up something for lent, as an exercise in self-discipline, which I'm sadly lacking in.
This year I noticed I was snacking on biscuits/cookies and those granola bars more than I ever have, so that's what I've dumped this time. Also chocolate of any sort, though that won't trouble me at all.

Last year I gave up my usual tipple of hard cider, the year before it was buying books, I think.

Pop (soda/coke/pepsi).

But never heard of Protestants doing that either.

I'm not sure. Having just served jury duty for the past week, my entire internal calendar is totally messed up.

Using the Interstate to commute to work may be number one. Last year I tried to avoid the Interstate as much as possible, but this year it's just for the 35 mile daily commute.

Edit: I just thought about giving up HOT + SEXY for Lent; then I remembered that technically speaking Sundays don't count as days of Lent.

Lent is part of every Christian calander, but giving something up is basically optional. Some people feel it does something for them.

Personally, I think its rather silly. (that is, I don't think giving something up really edifies -- better to do something for other people instead) I also think the whole eat fish bit is silly since fish happens to be one of my favorite meals.

I do it for myself, not for Jesus. If jesus also wants to give up cookies, that's up to him.

No, but the world might break out in peace but that would be detrimental to the US, Russian and Chinese economies.

You think Russia, the US, and China are at odds because of religion?

How can you possibly give up Lent for Lent? Craziness.

Never underestimate the power of a political dogma held more strongly than a religious faith.

Although I should point out that China only allows state run religions and Russian Orthodoxy is once again on the rise.

I was referring to their arms sales and if peace broke out, the lack thereof.
