So it all comes down to money? This seems very appropriate:

If fraud can equal money, then you equal money.

The problem is that the horse bit isn't mentioned in the list of ingredients, and it may contain antibiotics and stuff not intended for use by humans. If it were mentioned and deemed safe from the start there wouldn't really be a problem.

I agree with the "mention it first" part (generally). My take on these food issues is twofold: (1) as long as I don't get sick, I don't care what's in it and I don't care if you didn't tell me what was in it (and I've had a good share of Ikea's meatballs); (2) why are these stories coming out now... there have been like 5 or 6 of them in the last couple of weeks; perhaps it's a slow news cycle... why report on Middle East conflict when you can report on horsemeat being in Ikea meatballs.

LOL... Ikea doesn't sell meatballs.

There is no real reason not to eat horse, other than culture. Its actually leaner and supposedly richer in protein. I ate it when I lived overseas. My Aunt/Uncle essentially sort of lied to me (the word for horsemeat is very like the English word"beef", they pretty much took advantage of my confusion at first). However, the truth was I really could not tell, except that horsemeat is drier (read --"leaner") than beef.

That said, I won't go out of my way to eat it, though its funny that horsemeat is so denigrated here when its considered a delicacy elsewhere.

Exactly.. the fully sensible view of many western Europeans and Americans.
(even though I admit to a similar bias myself... but I do acknowledge it is not a sensible bias, at least)

Oh... apparently you can buy horse meat in speciality shops in the UK, but its generally illegal here in the US to sell horse meat at all. (go figure! :? )

It's a lot like those environmental advertisements and programs that encourage you to donate money to some animal shelter. They show us footage of sad kittens and puppies and cute otters that do human things with their hands but never did I see a hippopotamus in need of our money.
