George L. trigg's Landmark Experiments in twentieth century physics.
While there are some curious choices (j.j. Thomson on isotopes instead of the more definitive mass spectrometry experiments), it is well written for those of us who have a decent grasp of chem and physics 101, but don't have time to academically pursue further. Unfortunately, it stops at 1975, and we very much need an updated edition. Also, his earlier crucial experiments isn't reprinted, and there are less of those on library shelves.
A great book for seeing why the first 75 years of the twentieth century physics was the cool science.
Only 10 bucks for a great read, and a great reference book.
