University Life: Choose Two of the Three options in the poll

Postby Eddygp on Mon Apr 08, 2013 9:09 am

Life in university is usually reduced to two of these three options:

Great marks
Loads of social life
Sleeping

So choose the two you chose/would choose/would have chosen in the poll to see which is the most common (and maybe important/amusing) option.

Sleeping, why did you wait until you were in your 40s to go to uni?

For the average person starting at the "normal" age (18-22 yrs old): grades and social life. Sleep when you're old.

For the average person going back, or starting later (late 20's or older): grades and sleep.

When I first went to uni, I went with the social life and sleep. It didn't work out. When I went back at 30, I chose all three and it's going/has gone very well. Fortunately for me, a "social life" these days doesn't involve 40-hour parties every weekend.

What about actually wanting to learn and the grades are incidental? That was me (and the whole thing was interrupted by the arrival of the curlson, then the curlette. Maybe one day I'll go back to Southampton and finish that History degree...

His omission reflects the lack of that desire. Most people in college (1) don't know what they actually want, (2) don't greatly appreciate how their education relates and will relate to their future lives, so the desire to learn becomes clouded and diminished. If one knows #1 and #2, then you usually get that desire to learn.

That and most people don't really desire to learn with such intensity, and the formal setting may be a hindrance for them.

I think the answer totally depends on whether the student is paying their own tuition out of their pocket. To those who are, it's easily much more likely good marks and social life.

To those who are having their tuition paid with someone elses money and do not truly understand the cost of going to the University or the value of the money paying for the tuition, the answer will more likely be sleeping and social life.

For myself, when someone else was paying, I didn't go to class when I didn't feel like it, and many times I didn't feel like it because my social life the night before was much more important. When I was spending my own money on tuition, I put a lot more effort into learning and getting good marks and never missing class. Sleep and social life were both secondary, but I left out sleep.

I've read that requiring one's child to pay 10% of the tuition is enough of an incentive to do better--or to reconsider college.

I would grant that would probably work (to a slightly lesser effect) even if they only had to pay 1% out of pocket.

In general, the more skin we have in the game, the more we will strive to take care of our skin and the game.

Scotty, (in b4 this ends up in "No Context Quotes") you are right. When I did my big, expensive course with the American Comedy Institute, the older guys, who were doing it becuase we wanted to, and were paying for it ourselves, turned up and got as much as we could out of it. The ones who turned up or not depending on whim, energy levels, hangover, etc were all youngsters, with bills presumably being footed by ma and/or pa. Though there were several youngters who were as dedicated as the old farts too. But the ones who treated it as something they "ought to" do rather than something they "wanted to" do were all of the younger persuasion.

Well... I think that even if it is paid with someone else's money, if you want to do it, you will go for it, regardless of who's money it was.

How come full-time girlfriend isn't on the list? This poll sucks.
