He points out that if men circumcised as infants suffer the same they wouldn't know as they have nothing to compare it with. He also tells me that he hasn't found any good evidence for health or hygeine benefits for circumcision. He is careful to say that the practice is nowhere near as horrific as female genital mutilation. But he does say it is highly questionable, that he would never dream of having children of his own circumcised. If I wasn't so squeamish I might have googled to see if there is any external supporting evidence. Because this is my friend's story you understand. It is not about me.

I had this done for medical reasons also (and I'm not about to be squeamish or shy about it - it's just a fact) and I agree that there is a loss of feeling. If it's done purely for hygeine reasons then I think it's a cop-out, just shake a few extra times when peeing or whatever and pull it back when you have a shower to clean in there, it's like having all your fingernails removed to prevent dirt buildup underneath them. But there are other legitimate medical reasons to need this paticular operation (I won't identify the one that forced me into it, that's getting a little too personal) and if it's one of these reasons (phimosis, recurrent balanoposthitis, BXO, recurrent UT infections, STDs and cancer are the main 6) then it has to be done in much the same way as if your fingernails were getting constantly infected and causing significant pain and discharge then under those conditions it may be wise to have your fingernails removed (direct analogy to balanoposthitis there).
I have no objection to circumcision on purely medical grounds, in fact I would encourage someone advised by a doctor to have it done for those reasons to bite the bullet and have it done, but I do disagree with it for cultural (especially religious) reasons, and I think hygeine is a lame excuse for it too (and take it from someone who has experienced it as an adult the discomfort for 3-6 weeks depending how fast you heal and the loss of sensation just isn't worth saving you time making sure you keep yourself clean 3-6 times a day for a few seconds each time).
