Should GMO food be allowed?

Postby waauw on Thu Jun 20, 2013 2:34 pm

In europe they are forbidden because we see them as dangerous for our health.(or so goes the official statement anyway)
But I know a lot of you are americans and in the USA they are allowed. So I'd love to hear your opinions on them.

If GMO foods aren't allowed, then neither should selectively bred crops be allowed.

We just had this thread, not two months ago.

You were a part of it.

Hmmm... maybe not.

I get you confused with other posters.

Just found it. It was actually last September.

I think as long as it's labelled as being such it should be allowed. Some people would rather take the risk than have less food to go around. I'm from the US and it's hard for me to say someone should be forced to do/not do anything as long as they are aware of the possible consequences. If there is a informed demand for GMO food it should be allowed. Conversely, I don't think GMO farmers should be forced on anyone or supported by the government in any way beyond what any other farmer would be.

I am reminded of this: One fool says, "This method is old so it is good!" Another fool says, "This method is new, so it is better."

This debate is much the same. One fool says, "This is all-natural, so it is good." Another fool says, "This is artificially-enhanced, so it is better."

Just as "old" and "new" are neither intrinsically good nor intrinsically bad, so with "artificial" and "natural." In some cases, we can improve substantially on nature's work. In other cases, we try and fail miserably. Each product needs to be judged on its own merits.
