I think this merits a second thread, because we are soon going to be heading to elections once again.
Just last week, the Prime Minister announced that the state news broadcaster ERT would be shut down immediately, with all employees of the organization fired. He did so without consulting with Parliament or the leaders of the other two parties which joined him in government (PASOK and Democratic Left). Democratic Left today announced that they are quitting the government (Edit: English link here). That leaves the situation as such:
New Democracy (conservative/center-right) 125 seats
PASOK (Panhellenic "Socialist" Movement) (social democratic/center-left) 24 seats
Total seats for Government: 149 seats
SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) (range from democratic socialist to communist) 75 seats
Independent Greeks (nationalist conservative) 20 seats
Golden Dawn (fascist) 18 seats
Democratic Left (democratic socialist) 17 seats
KKE (Communist Party of Greece) 12 seats
With 14 independents who were expelled from the government parties for not voting for the bailout measures.
Polling at just under the 3 percent threshold are the Greens and the communist party Plan B.
The minority government, of which 140 seats are required to be allowed to exist, means there could be elections at any moment a majority vote occurs. However while Democratic Left have quit the government they do not support new elections at the moment.
