US vocabulary help again

Postby jonesthecurl on Wed Jun 26, 2013 12:32 am

I know I could go ask someone.
But they're all asleep, and it'd interrupt the creative flow anyway.
Will US people understand me if I say "street urchins"?
I'm using it to describe the Baker Street Irregulars.
While I'm at it, who knows who the original Baker Street Irregulars were?
And does anyone know Wiggins's first name?

i know what it means (disclaimer: a lot of my knowledge is about random/unnecessary things) and online dictionaries don't indicate that it's UK slang

but people in this forum are probably a bit more educated than the average person at a comedy show, so you can't really be sure. it will probably go over a few heads.

Absolutely.

They were the Street Urchins from the Sherlock Holmes stories, who did his spy work. The name Baker Street Irregulars is a decent context clue, anyway.
But nobody reads those stories in the US, so I would say not many people would be confident guessing that.

Street Urchins is a common term that doesn't require being well read to comprehend and I'd expect even the most pedestrian of intellects to know it.

You overestimate the intellect of your fellow man.

Still, I suppose those who go out to see live shows tend to be more intellectual than those who only watch television, so it's probably safe to use in a live show.

Not really, since I sincerely believe human intelligence is overrated
and we are all fortunate that there are a few smart humans around
to nudge the rest of us into the future.

Were the Baker Street Irregulars in the Sherlock Holmes movies (the modern versions)? If so, then maybe people will get it. Otherwise, I agree with Juan... no one in that audience (upper crusty South New Jersey though it may be) has read those books.

This is for the next panto, so much of the audience will be small. I guess I'll have to just tell people who they are. Especially as we have a "Baker Street" near the theatre.

Mom mom used to complain that I dressed like a street urchin but I never knew what she meant so it didn't bother me much. I probably would have thought it was cool anyway.
