I keep burning my tongue.

Postby Funkyterrance on Wed Jun 26, 2013 11:11 am

So I burnt my tongue pretty badly on some hot beverage the other day and now what keeps happening is I go to test something for temperature with my mouth and it seems ok so I gulp it down. Thing is, I think my tongue is too numb to tell what's too hot and I've been repeatedly burning my tongue! I thought of testing with my finger but that's dirty and everyone knows your finger is less sensitive than your mouth when it comes to temperature. I also thought of doing the baby bottle thing onto my wrist but how do you put a little bit of tea from your cup onto your wrist without making a mess? I guess I could drink tea from a baby bottle but people at work might think that was unusual. This sucks, I haven't been able to taste food and drinks properly for a couple of days now. What's a hunky tea-drinking guy like me to do?

Well, you could use the test of time ... wait until you drink it ... happens with me and coffee at work all the time.

You could also use the blow gently on the cup to cool it off. Lots of steam means it's too hot.

You could also keep your mouth closed and let your lips decide how hot it is.

But really you should not be making tea that hot in the first place! Think of the poor tea leaves!

Tzor, I got a great idea while reading your post: Why don't YOU come over and test my tea every day before I drink it? You also seem to know more about preparing it than I do so maybe you could make it as well. I will of course supply you with all of your own tea you can drink as payment and I'll even make us some breakfast wraps as well(I'm an expert at that).

Pah - anyone that says not to use really hot water to make tea in the first place knows nothing of making tea (at least assuming we're talking english (breakfast) tea and not herbal tea) - you need the water as hot as possible to get the flavours to infuse properly.

I've found this to be true as well crispy but I'm not an expert. In the morning I drink regular black tea always though. I do drink herbal teas but usually just in the evenings to wind down or for their curative properties.

I think the answer here can be found in the Simpsons. In the Chili Cookoff episode, Homer drinks a bunch of candle wax to coat in the inside of his mouth, to protect against the heat of hot chili peppers. While hot beverages might eventually melt the wax, you'll get a few good gulps. Your stomach, however, might singe a bit.

You may be onto something there Andy... maybe a stomach tube would be more practical though?(Again, the "work" thing right?)

@ Koolbak, isn't it the worst? Imagine if it never got better?!
The funny thing is though that it hasn't affected how much I eat(you would think you would eat less if you couldn't taste stuff). I think it's because I keep eating things in hope that on this next thing my tongue will be healed.

FT, perhaps you should use some investigative science and trial and error. Get one of those super precise laser-thermometers for cooking (just point the laser and get a read out of the temperature).

Then, make something as hot as you can. Read the temperature and make a nice chart. Put down your data, take a sip, and see if you get burned. If you do, wait until you tongue is healed and try again with the beverage cooled longer to a slightly lower temp. Rinse and repeat for a few days or weeks until you find a nice sufficiently hot temperature range that won't immediately burn.

I had an evil (not really, I actually like him) urologist tell me once that excessive tea drinking can not only increase my PSA test numbers, it's not good for the prostrate. So I've cut down massively on tea intake.

Pity, I still have a half a tin of Gunpowder. And my co-worker from China has even more powerful stuff.

By the way, have you heard of the really "fancy" tea that looks like a large ball and explodes into a flower when prepared in the tea pot?

Hot but not boiling, just slightly under a boil. Anything too hot can scare the tea leaves. Black tea may require 212 degrees, but green tea requires 160-180 and white tea 155-165.

"Using water that is too hot results in bitter tea and is probably the most common error people make when preparing tea."

Of course English tea is black so one needs a higher temperature.

I fear you have the dreaded Tongue Numb disease. No worries, it never extends to finger tips, but may infect other orifices.

Replaced a fence, counted plastic forks and cookies putting them in zip lock bags, swimming, driving over to look at the rivers. You?

Probably about five or six large cups a day. Mostly green and white.

That doesn't sound right. Especially green tea with all the talk about it being so good for you. I don't drink that much but I was sure a pot full every day would be fine.

What does laying flat have to do with urologist?????

Perhaps you need to find a urologist that doesn't have you lay flat.
