Of all problems, I find corruption, while certainly one of the biggest problems, the least fixable. Well, maybe just behind global warming as the least fixable.

I guess so. It's been around since the beginning of time, and sadly as technology advances exponentially and morality decreases, and the reality that those with power are the ones who control technology as well as impact cultures and morality, I think corruption is also expanding exponentially.

So long as humanity yearns for more than it needs, there will be humans who will do anything to get it.

I think culture (and not culture in the sense of heritige or customs; more in the sense of how and what drives us, what framework we use to make our decisions, etc) and the prevelance of corruption are extremely closely linked.

Look at say the tourist traps in the med, eastern europe and north africa. Basically they will swindle you out of an extra dollar any chance they get; and this is generally accepted as to how you do things: I.e. they have a very accepting culture of low level corruption. You'd get hung out to dry if you tried that kind of thing in more westernised tourist traps (their corruption is at a much higher level ;))

Lava; it's really hot, and it's huge, like big enough to make islands and stuff. Don't even get me started on how literally "in the world" it is.

the biggest problem in the world is the current human condition and human nature in general, which (from what i can tell) stems from irrationality and ignorance.

theoretically this problem can be solved, if human reason eventually wins out. but i don't know what will happen, since we are the first known species of our kind.

it may actually be an insurmountable obstacle, considering that after 13 billion years there is not evidence of any other species becoming successful enough to be detected by our current tools.

This is legitimately an excruciatingly difficult poll, given only one selection.

Nope, it's not reason what is needed, it's compassion, acceptance and love. Yes, I said love.

Fix overpopulation and all other problems fix themselves.

If we had a reasonable population density of 5 people per square mile, we could all drive around in Sherman tanks and shit and piss and drop our garbage anywhere and the environment would just laugh at us and keep on going about its business. It is only because there are so damn many of us that we poison the environment. Its capacity for absorbing and recycling poisons is enormous; we just need to drop to a population density where we do not tax that capacity.

If we had a reasonable population density of 5 people per square mile, nobody would hate their neighbour enough to want to kill them. There might be the occasional fisticuffs over access to the best raspberry bush or whatever, but afterwards the combatants would pick themselves up and laugh at their own stupid antics and carry on about their business. All forms of orneriness and cussedness would be reduced to comedic levels. Nobody who lives in the boondocks genuinely hates their neighbour; hatred is a function of population density.

If we had a reasonable population density of 5 people per square mile, there would be no war or terrorism, and government would be limited to keeping the peace at the annual Midsummer Fair. Anyone living close enough to interact with someone else would know their name and their face; there would be no need for passports or census forms or fingerprints. As Robert Heinlein said, "Any planet crowded enough to require I.D. cards is too crowded for me."

If we had a reasonable population density of 5 people per square mile, there would be no poverty. Some people would be more affluent than others, of course, but even the poorest would be able to find some piece of land that nobody cared enough about to charge rent for and would be able to erect a homestead there.

If we had a reasonable population density of 5 people per square mile, there would be no plagues. Diseases, no matter how virulent, would spread with treacle-like slowness. There would be no insanity or drug addiction. People would enjoy some nice psychedelic mushrooms and stuff, of course, but without the need to drown out the incessant chatter of their neighbours they would not need heavy narcotics. Meeting ones' neighbours would be a joy rather than a chore. Backgammon would make a major comeback, and people would take time to exchange massages instead of insults.

There is no human problem which cannot be traced to the fact that there are simply too damn many of us. Fix that and everything else is a dawdle. Maybe instead of fluoridating the water we should be adding sterility-causing drugs to the water supply.

I agree with dukasaur and keefie, the biggest problem is overpopulation. It's the origin of many of the above listed problems
