For the progressives, the only standard for a hate crime is that the victim must have a different skin color as the criminal, so by their logic, this should also be a hate crime.

That isnt true...I think someone targeting old people, or special needs persons, or sexual orientation. would also be guilty.

And travyon wasn't a hate crime at all. It was the result of a reckless stupid individual who got away with some level of murder....and no doubt, race probably, was a factor, but mostly, it was just his arrogance and stupidity.

Also, the alleged shooter bragged about going "golfing", which is knocking out white people. He bragged about having 5 "woods" (knockouts) in 1 day.

I hate the term "hate crime". It's a CRIME! MURDER. Do we gain anything by labeling it a "hate" crime? Does it ensure harsher sentencing? Killing a homosexual is a CRIME.... was hate involved? Its pretty simple.

A hate crime is a crime in which you commit, not because you have any personal relationship with the victim, but, because you hate what that victim represents.

There's a personal relationship involved when you murder someone because they banged your wife, killing a generic someone-elses-wife-banger from the next state is not going to satisfy the urge, it has to be the person who actually stuck his wang in you-know-where. However if you were to cruise around shooting every someone-elses-wife-banger then you are commiting a hate crime against people who bang other peoples wives.

Or more plainly its a crime of passion vs. sensless murder. I am definitely in favour of punishing one much more severley than the other.

Well, that's the assumption inherent within punitive justice. Raise the cost, and presumably people would do less of that crime, hence having higher prison terms for hate crimes. That's the logic. Whether it's effective or not is another debate which would be more interesting to address.

I think the whole extra time for hate crime thing is not necessarily about the offender and the victim or anything related to prison time as much as it is about teaching a lesson/making an emample to the rest of society.

I'm agreeing with Lootifer up there, that there's no real indication that this latest was a hate crime... But it brings up the point and you have to ask - Had two white teens beaten an elderly black man to death... Yeah, it would be on 4 major TV networks for 24 hours.

The idea of a hate crime is a terrible thing - It is the policing of thought.

Ok lets ignore "hate crime", but instead look at it from the other angle. Do you agree there are mitigating circumstances in some murder cases? What about self defense compared to a murder? I mean the net result is the same (one dead person, one "life-taker"), but the two scenarios are vastly different.

The taking of someones life is not black and white (pun not intended) and should never be treated as such.
